Visa and entry requirements
As a citizen of Sweden, you typically qualify for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which allows tourism or short business travel for stays up to 90 days without a traditional visitor visa. You must apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before boarding your flight. ESTA approvals are usually granted within minutes but the U.S. Department of State recommends applying at least 72 hours in advance.
Your passport must be machine-readable, biometric (e-passport with chip), and valid for the duration of your stay. ESTA approval is generally valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. ESTA approval is not a guarantee of admission — Customs and Border Protection officers make the final admission decision at the U.S. port of entry. Upon arrival you will receive a Form I-94 admission record (digital, retrievable later from i94.cbp.dhs.gov).
Always check the latest CDC travel health notices and U.S. Department of State country information page before booking. Requirements can change with little notice. Carry printed copies of your ESTA confirmation, return flight, and accommodation details — some Customs officers ask to see them.
