What the dealer lot doesn't tell first-time renters
- A standard driver's license covers an RV in 47 states, but a handful (California, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, others) require a non-commercial Class B above 26,000 lbs or 40 ft — check your pickup state.
- Big rigs hit hard length caps on scenic roads: Going-to-the-Sun (Glacier) is 21 ft, Tioga Pass (Yosemite) is 30 ft, and PCH north of Big Sur caps at 32 ft. Class A coaches are simply not permitted on some of these.
- Holding-tank capacity, not bed count, is the real trip-length limit — a family of four fills the gray tank in 2-3 days, so plan dump stops every 48-72 hours regardless of the spec sheet.
- Class B campervans give up sleeping capacity but win nearly everywhere else for 1-2 travelers: garage-parkable, the best resale, and the fastest setup.
