Before you ask anyone anything
First-time renters lose money on three things: undersized rigs, overestimated mileage, and surprise fees at pickup. Solve all three with a 10-minute pre-booking conversation.
The FMCSA passenger-weight standard is 180 lb per occupant (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). Multiply that by total seats, add fresh-water (8.34 lb/gal × tank capacity per the US Bureau of Reclamation water-density constant), gear, food, and propane — first-timers consistently overshoot GVWR by 200-400 lb without realising. The host's listing must publish GVWR + dry weight; if it doesn't, that's a red flag.

Ask these before you wire money. Hosts who answer all 12 quickly are the ones to book with.
- Is unlimited mileage included, or what's the per-mile fee over the cap?
- Generator hours included vs. metered — and what's the cost per extra hour?
- Propane and dump station — included or pay-on-return?
- Pet policy — fee, deposit, breed restrictions?
- Linens, kitchen kit, camp chairs — included or BYO?
- Walkthrough length at pickup — under 30 minutes is a red flag for first-timers.
- Rig age + last service date — under 5 years and within 6 months ideal.
- Roadside assistance number — yours, or theirs to manage?
- What's the deductible if I damage something minor?
- Are there altitude or off-road restrictions?
- Generator quiet hours at campgrounds — does the host's rig have one?
- Fuel type — gas vs diesel, and is it full at pickup or pay-as-used?
What good answers look like
A good host answers all 12 within a day. They give you a written summary, not just chat. They volunteer info you didn't ask for (e.g., 'the side awning has a known squeak, here's how to fix it').

Second under-shared truth: rigs with 'sleeps 6' marketing rarely fit 6 adults. The cabover bunk in a Class C is rated by manufacturers for occupant weight under 600 lb total — two large adults exceed it. Always verify the convertible-dinette + cabover real dimensions, not the marketing copy.
