Tread depth doesn't save you from age
Tires with full tread depth can still rupture catastrophically on the highway if the rubber compound has degraded from age. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tire and Rim Association, and the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) all converge on the same rule: RV tires should be replaced at 5-7 years from the date of manufacture regardless of remaining tread depth, per the NHTSA tire-aging research summary at nhtsa.gov/equipment/tires.
Why RVs are different from passenger cars on this question: RVs spend 95% of their life parked, where UV exposure, ozone, and heat-cycling degrade the rubber compound faster than rolling miles do. A passenger car's tires wear out (tread-wise) before they age out. An RV's tires age out before they wear out, and the failure mode is sidewall belt separation at highway speed — the most dangerous tire failure in motor-vehicle physics per NHTSA crash data analysis.
How to read the DOT date code
Every tire sold in the US carries a DOT (Department of Transportation) code molded into the sidewall. The last 4 digits are the date of manufacture: the first 2 digits are the week (01-52) and the last 2 are the year. A DOT code ending in '2624' means the tire was made in week 26 of 2024 (late June 2024). A code ending in '4519' means week 45 of 2019 (early November 2019) — a 6.5-year-old tire as of 2026-06.
The DOT code can be on the inside sidewall (mounting-side) only. Inspect both sides of every tire. If the code is on the inside and the rig is mounted, the host can rotate the tire 180° to expose the code, or pull the rig to a tire shop for inspection. A host refusing to share the DOT codes of all 4-6 tires is a non-starter — book elsewhere.

The 5-year inspection and 7-year replacement lines

For consumer-owned and consumer-rental RVs that sit outdoors for months at a time, the 7-year line is industry-standard.

Visual signs of dangerous tire aging

The questions to ask your host before pickup

Cold pressure + load-rating math
Per NHTSA + the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 110, every motorhome carries a tire-information placard near the driver's seat or fuel-fill door specifying the cold tire pressure for both unloaded and fully-loaded conditions. Underinflation by even 10-15% accelerates sidewall failure and is the leading cause of RV tire blowouts per NHTSA crash data.
Load-rating math: the sum of the load ratings of all tires must equal or exceed the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) printed on the manufacturer's data plate. If a host has replaced original-equipment tires with lower-load-rated tires, the rig is illegal to operate at full load per FMVSS 110 + DOT enforcement guidance.
What replacement actually costs
RV tire replacement at a commercial tire dealer in 2026 runs roughly $250-450 per tire installed for Class C size (LT225/75R16 or 245/70R19.5), $450-750 per tire for Class A size (255/80R22.5 or 295/80R22.5). The spare counts. A full 6-tire replacement on a Class A diesel pusher can run $3,000-4,500 installed.

ST vs LT vs commercial — which tire goes where
RV tires fall into three federal-recognized service categories per the Tire and Rim Association yearbook + DOT classification: ST (Special Trailer), LT (Light Truck), and commercial truck. The category molded on the sidewall determines what the tire is legally designed to handle. Per the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 119 for ST + LT, FMVSS 121 for commercial), substituting between categories voids manufacturer warranty and may void insurance coverage in an accident.
ST tires are designed for trailers ONLY — stiffer sidewall for tongue weight + sway resistance, max speed rating typically 65 mph (per Goodyear + Carlisle + Maxxis ST-tire load tables). Many ST tires fail catastrophically when run above 65 mph for extended highway driving. Travel trailers + fifth-wheels + boat trailers + utility trailers use ST tires.

Most LT tires carry speed ratings of Q (99 mph) or R (106 mph) per the SAE tire-speed-rating standard.
