National Park RV length limits — the table every renter needs before booking

What the NPS actually publishes

The National Park Service publishes RV length limits per campground, not per park, and the limits vary dramatically inside a single park. Yellowstone National Park's Madison Campground accepts RVs up to 40 feet but the popular Norris Campground caps at 50 feet for trailers and 50 feet for motorhomes per the NPS Yellowstone campground page (nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/camping.htm). Glacier National Park's Many Glacier Campground accepts vehicles only up to 35 feet combined length per nps.gov/glac.

These limits aren't suggestions — rangers measure at the entrance station and turn oversized rigs around. The wasted-day cost of arriving with an oversized rig is the most expensive first-time-renter mistake in the NPS system. Always verify the campground's specific length limit at recreation.gov AND on the park's nps.gov campground page (they sometimes disagree — recreation.gov reflects current operating policy).

The 3 parks that route RVs to specific loops

Yellowstone's Fishing Bridge RV Park is the ONLY full-hookup campground inside Yellowstone, and per the concessionaire (Xanterra) it accepts hard-sided RVs ONLY (no pop-up campers, no tents inside the rig) due to bear-management policy. Reservations open at recreation.gov 13 months in advance and the popular summer windows sell out within 60 seconds.

Acadia's Schoodic Woods Campground is RV-friendly across all sites BUT the Schoodic Peninsula portion of the park (not Mount Desert Island) keeps RV traffic concentrated away from the heaviest tourist zones. Per nps.gov/acad, this is by design — Mount Desert Island roads (especially the Park Loop Road) constrict motorhomes over 35 feet.

Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road has a hard 21-foot vehicle length limit AND 8-foot width limit between Avalanche Campground and Sun Point per nps.gov/glac. Larger RVs must take US-2 around the south end of the park. Plan campground booking on the LEFT side of the road for your travel direction.

When the RV won't fit

If your rental rig exceeds the campground limit, you have three options: (1) book a private RV park outside the park (KOA, Yogi Bear's Jellystone, independent parks), (2) dispersed-camp on adjacent USFS or BLM land (per fs.usda.gov + blm.gov boondocking rules — no length limit on dispersed camping), or (3) downsize the rental.

PickRV's listings disclose total length on every spec sheet. For a Yellowstone trip in a 40-foot Class A, you'd want to book Madison or Bridge Bay (40-ft sites) at recreation.gov first, then lock the rental dates to match. For a 28-foot Class C, almost any NPS campground works.

The 6-month + 13-month reservation windows

Per Recreation.gov reservation policy, most NPS campgrounds open reservations exactly 6 months in advance at 10:00 AM ET, EXCEPT Yellowstone Xanterra-managed campgrounds (Madison, Norris, Canyon, Grant Village, Bridge Bay, Fishing Bridge) which open 13 months in advance. The 10:00 AM ET opening is a hard moment — premier sites at Yellowstone Madison + Glacier Many Glacier + Yosemite North Pines clear all slots within 60 seconds.

Set the calendar reminder for the EXACT 6-month or 13-month date counting from your trip's first night. Have Recreation.gov logged in with your payment method saved 5 minutes before the window opens. Verify the campground length limit BEFORE the window — you won't have time during the booking minute.

What the brochures bury about length

Length limits at NPS campgrounds are written for the LONGEST site in the loop, not the average. A campground advertising '40-foot RVs welcome' may have only 3-5 sites that actually accommodate 40 feet — the rest may cap at 30-35 feet. Recreation.gov shows per-site length limits when you click into a specific site number; the campground-level summary is the maximum, not the typical.

If you book a campsite at the campground's maximum advertised length and your rig is at or near that maximum, request a 'no preference' campground assignment with a note about your length OR explicitly book a site verified at your rig length. Showing up with a 38-foot motorhome to a site whose actual maneuver pad fits 32 feet is the second-most-common ranger-turnaround at NPS gates after no-reservation oversized rigs.

Width, height, and bridge-clearance constraints rangers don't advertise

Length is the headline number but width and height also disqualify rigs from specific NPS roads. Per the NPS Going-to-the-Sun Road regulations at nps.gov/glac, the vehicle width limit between Avalanche Campground and Sun Point is 8 feet INCLUDING extended mirrors — many Class A motorhomes have factory mirror width of 8.5-9 feet, instantly disqualifying them. The Tioga Pass road through Yosemite (Highway 120) carries an 8.5-foot width recommendation and a 25-foot length recommendation on the steepest descents per nps.gov/yose.

Height clearance affects every park with stone-arched entrance gates or tunnels. Zion's Mt. Carmel Tunnel (nps.gov/zion) requires a $15 escort permit for any vehicle over 11 feet 4 inches tall OR over 7 feet 10 inches wide — rangers stop oncoming traffic and pilot the oversized rig through the center of the tunnel. The escort permit applies to most Class A motorhomes and many Class C rigs; without it, you cannot legally enter the eastern half of the park. The Wind Cave NP (nps.gov/wica) underpass on Highway 385 caps height at 12 feet 6 inches. The North Rim road at Grand Canyon includes Lockett Meadow's narrow USFS-maintained switchbacks where vehicles over 22 feet are discouraged.

Cell + Wi-Fi reality at NPS campgrounds

Most NPS campgrounds have no cell coverage and no Wi-Fi by design — the parks were established to preserve wild character, not to deliver bandwidth. Per per-park nps.gov 'Plan Your Visit > Services' pages: Yellowstone Mammoth + Old Faithful + Canyon Village have intermittent cell from Verizon + AT&T; backcountry campgrounds have nothing. Yosemite Valley has Verizon + AT&T LTE near Curry Village + the Valley Visitor Center; Tuolumne Meadows is dead. Glacier West Glacier + St Mary entrance areas have cell; the interior is dead.

Plan check-in and emergency contact accordingly. Most NPS visitor centers offer free Wi-Fi at the building during business hours.
