Timing
Late August through September is the guide's clear answer: afternoon hail risk drops sharply after August 15, I-70 weekend traffic eases after Labor Day, days run 70-80 F with nights in the mid-50s, and aspens turn gold above 8,000 feet by mid-September. The season to treat carefully is mid-May through early July — peak Front Range hail, with June historically the worst month for 2-inch-plus stones — and late December through February brings chain laws on I-70 and sub-zero nights that freeze water lines. Event pressure is moderate but real: the Great American Beer Festival (typically October) books Cherry Creek and Chatfield five to six months ahead, and Broncos home weekends push metro rates 1.3-1.6x.

The close-in base 12 miles southeast in Aurora: 135 sites with full hookups at $41 (electric-only $28), rigs to 45 feet, 6-month window. Two operational notes from the guide: the daily park pass is separate from the camping fee, and the dump station queues 45 minutes on summer Saturday mornings — fill fresh water at your site spigot instead.
The southwest anchor 20 miles out in Littleton: 146 full-hookup sites across the A, B, and D loops at $41 plus 77 electric-only at $36, with 20/30/50-amp service and rigs to 45 feet. Positioned on the mountain side of the metro, it shortens every foothills day trip — and books out 5-6 months ahead of festival season.
The private resort in Golden, 15 miles west at the literal foot of the foothills: 141 full-hookup sites — 88 of them pull-throughs — for rigs to 70 feet at about $75 a night with a heated pool and laundry. For the biggest Class A coaches, this is the no-compromise option, and the 12-month window rewards early planning.
The signature high-altitude drive — with a hard vehicle rule: rigs over 30 feet turn around at Echo Lake (11,000 feet), and timed entry books on Recreation.gov. Verify your rental's length before promising the summit, and remember the guide's altitude protocol: 24-48 hours of light activity in Denver before pushing high.
What it costs
Motorhomes on PickRV list from $89 to $450 per night, with one 10% service fee plus tax at checkout — the visible price is the full price — and free cancellation for 48 hours. Denver camping runs $28-75 a night, and the honest budget line item nobody expects is time: Friday-afternoon I-70 westbound can cost three hours.
Good to know
Barely, and not usefully. Sec. 54-464 gives rigs over 22 feet a maximum of 24 hours per 7-day period on residential streets, requires a 700-foot move to reset, and neighbor complaints via Denver 311 flag oversized vehicles within hours. Tickets start at $50, tows around $220 plus $25-40 a day storage. The state parks 12-20 miles out are the real answer.
Before noon or after 9 p.m. on Fridays, and the same discipline for Sunday returns — the guide documents the Idaho Springs-to-Empire chokepoint turning a 45-minute stretch into 2-3 hours during the Friday 2-7 p.m. and Sunday 2-8 p.m. windows, June through September and all ski season. A motorhome in that queue burns fuel and patience equally.
A real, insurable risk with a calendar: mid-May through early July is peak Front Range hail, June worst of all, with golf-ball stones possible in 10 minutes per the guide. Check the NOAA Boulder forecast before parking, avoid tree cover during storm risk, and consider late August through September instead — the same mountains, none of the ice.
