Timing
Late August through September, like every Denver plan — hail season done, traffic thinner, gold aspens above 8,000 feet, and nights in the mid-50s that a van's insulation handles gracefully. Vans stretch the season further than big rigs: mid-September high country that empties of trailers is prime van territory, though late-December-to-February cold still freezes plumbing and I-70 chain laws still apply over 10,000 lbs (most vans duck under). Altitude discipline is rig-agnostic — 24-48 hours easy in Denver, water before bed, no first-night alcohol. If the Great American Beer Festival (typically October) is the reason for the trip, book the state parks 5-6 months out with everyone else.

The drive that defines the van advantage: vehicles over 30 feet turn around at Echo Lake (11,000 feet), while a van books its Recreation.gov timed entry and keeps climbing. It is the highest-profile example of a corridor-wide pattern — mountain roads with length limits that a van never has to think about.
The city-side base 12 miles out: electric sites at $28 are the van-budget pick (full hookups $41), with the 6-month window and a separate daily park pass to remember at the gatehouse. Between city days and mountain days, it is the cheapest legal plug-in within sight of downtown.
The Sunday-propane stop — one of the few in metro Denver, per the guide — with a pull-through bay off Chambers Road, open 7 days. For a van running a diesel or propane heater into the shoulder season, this is the top-off point before any westbound leg, ideally before 5 p.m.
Lakewood's quieter park 14 miles out at about $40 with electric hookups and an on-site dump — positioned at the foot of the Bear Creek canyon corridor on the metro's west side. The harsh ones mostly don't: Sec. 54-464's 24-hour residential limit targets rigs over 22 feet, which most camper vans duck under. What still applies is the 72-hour rule — Sec. 54-465 requires every vehicle to move at least 700 feet every 72 hours or become tow-eligible as abandoned. Move the van, or better, base at a park.

Better than anything towed, but not immune: mid-May through early July is peak Front Range hail with June the historical worst. The van advantage is mobility — check the NOAA Boulder forecast and simply drive out from under the cell, something no unhitched trailer can do. Avoid tree cover when stones threaten; June storms drop golf balls in 10 minutes.
