Because this gear carries real risk, renters bring their own coverage, and any BLM or dispersed-camping access must be confirmed before pickup. Listings show whether a winch, trailer, and delivery are included. Renters pay one transparent 10% service fee at checkout plus tax, with no drip pricing, and cancellation is free for 48 hours.
Timing
The mountain riding season and the guide's best-of-Denver window converge on late August through September: hail risk collapses after August 15, high-country access is at its yearly maximum before early snow, days run 70-80 F, and post-Labor-Day I-70 traffic thins. Early summer carries two costs — peak hail (June worst, a genuine threat to machines on open trailers) and peak weekend traffic on the westbound corridor. Winter shuts the high country and adds chain laws for combinations over 10,000 lbs. Altitude is the quiet variable the guide flags for everyone: Denver sits at 5,280 feet and the riding goes far higher, so give yourself the 24-48 hour acclimatization window before hard physical days.

The staging base where the plains meet the mountains: Golden, 15 miles west, with 88 pull-through sites among 141 full-hookup pads and a 70-foot length cap that swallows any truck-plus-toy-hauler combination without unhooking. Position is the product — you start the I-70 climb ahead of anyone staging from the east side.
The combination-friendly utility stop: 12 diesel lanes with bulk DEF, RV fuel lanes separated from the semis, and a 24/7 dump at $10 ($7.50 with loyalty card). No overnighting allowed, but as the staging fuel-and-dump before a mountain rotation — or the tank-reset after one — it is the metro's most efficient stop for a loaded rig.
The route itself is a planning object: Friday 2-7 p.m. westbound and Sunday 2-8 p.m. eastbound, the Idaho Springs-Empire chokepoint stretches 45 minutes into 2-3 hours, June through September and ski season. With a trailer full of machines, leave before noon or after 9 p.m. — the guide's rule, and the difference between a ride day and a traffic day.
The southwest state-park alternative at $41 full-hookup, 45-foot sites, on the correct side of the metro for US-285 approaches into the mountains. Campgrounds here are basecamps — machines stay trailered in the park — but the position, the 50-amp service, and the 6-month window make it the budget-stable staging choice.

In the mountain corridor west of the city — the Aspen-Denver stretch is one of the strongest off-road regions in the PickRV catalog. The metro's parks and campgrounds are staging, not riding areas.
