PickRV's strongest off-road hubs are Moab in Utah, with its famous slickrock, and the Aspen-Denver corridor in Colorado. We have mapped 85-plus curated trails across 30 states, each with a difficulty rating and the permit or land-access notes you need before you go. Because this gear carries real risk, renters bring their own coverage, and any BLM or dispersed-camping access must be confirmed before pickup. Listings show whether a winch, trailer, and delivery are included. Renters pay one transparent 10% service fee at checkout plus tax, with no drip pricing, and cancellation is free for 48 hours.
Timing
Late October through April is the desert window, full stop — the city guide puts Anza-Borrego above 110 F daily from May through September, which ends the conversation for machines and riders alike. Inside the good season, one event dominates: the wildflower bloom (roughly March to mid-April, weather-dependent), when Borrego Palm Canyon Campground fills 60-90 days ahead and even the road shoulders at Henderson Canyon congest. Ride-trip planners should also note the city-side calendar — Comic-Con (typically late July) vacuums up county RV parks a year out, which matters if your trip brackets desert days with coastal staging. Winter delivers the ideal: 68-78 F on the coast, crisp rideable days in the badlands.

The designated campground inside the desert park, 88 miles out: water-and-electric on select sites, rigs to 35 feet, $35 a night on a 6-month window. It is the organized base for desert trips — with the caveat that state-park rules govern what runs where inside park boundaries, so the machine's legal terrain comes from the listing's access notes, not assumption.
The city guide notes the park's eastern region carries dispersed-camping privileges across most BLM-adjacent lands — the raw-desert version of the trip for self-contained rigs. That freedom comes with the standard desert responsibilities: confirm current access and vehicle rules with the managing agency before pickup, and treat washes and flash-flood terrain with respect.
The fuel staging the guide's own checklist prescribes: diesel and DEF at full big-rig pull-throughs at I-805 exit 1, called out specifically as the stop before any push east to Anza-Borrego. A truck-and-toy-hauler combination fuels without unhooking here — the last easy logistics before the desert grade.
The east-county full-hookup base at $80 a night, 17 miles out on the desert side of the metro: 70-foot sites hold the whole combination, shore power runs the chargers, and the $10 dump resets tanks between desert rotations. For a week alternating riding days and rest days, this is the sensible pivot point.
