SDMC §86.0139 prohibits parking any vehicle over 22 ft long or 7 ft tall on city streets between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. unless a city permit is obtained — and SD Police regularly write same-night citations on the Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and La Jolla bluffs corridor. SDMC §63.20.18 bans camping or sleeping in any vehicle inside city parks and on most beach parking lots between sunset and 8 a.m.

The single oasis is Campland on the Bay (553 sites on Mission Bay), operated by a private concessionaire under a long-running city lease, with full hookups and direct beach access. Two state park alternates exist within 50 miles: South Carlsbad State Beach (45 sites, cliff-top, reservecalifornia.com 6 months out) and Silver Strand State Beach (130 sites, Coronado, also reservecalifornia.com).

The eastern alternative is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (90 mi NE) with dispersed-camping privileges across most BLM-adjacent lands and a designated Borrego Palm Canyon Campground inside the park. Plan dump and propane at Mission Valley or Santee, base out of Campland on the Bay or one of the two state beaches, and time Anza-Borrego runs for late October through April when desert temperatures stay below 90 F.

The mistake renters make

Avoid this trap

Parking a Class A or large Class C overnight in a Pacific Beach or Mission Beach metered lot, assuming the meter receipt covers overnight stays.

SDMC §86.0139 overrides meter receipts and applies 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. citywide on posted streets. Tow + impound runs $400-$800 plus citation. Most rental contracts exclude citywide oversize-vehicle citations.
