Three logistics decide whether this trip works: the Rocky Creek Bridge one-lane reconstruction (8pm-6am closures running through August 31, 2026 per Caltrans District 5), the Pfeiffer Big Sur parking-boundary rule that pushes most rigs above 24 feet out of the campground, and the ReserveCalifornia six-month rolling window that opens daily at 8am PT for sites like Carpinteria's Santa Rosa loop hookups. Hearst Castle's Grand Rooms tour books on the same six-month rolling system and sells out on holiday weekends within minutes. Coastal fog complicates the rest: between late May and early September the marine layer typically clears between noon and 4pm before returning at dusk, so high-cliff photo stops at Bixby Creek and McWay Falls need to land in that window. Highway 1 turnouts at Bixby are not built for trailers or Class A coaches; plan a chase-vehicle drop or use the Hurricane Point pullout instead. This 7-day plan accepts those constraints, sequences camp arrivals away from closure windows, and treats the booking calendar as the first piece of equipment you pack.

Elevation profile, mostly sea-level with one climb that hurts: PCH never crosses anything alpine — peak vertical is the Hurricane Point switchback at roughly 700 ft above the surf, then a brief 1,000 ft kicker over the Carmel Highlands — but the gain comes in 6-9% pinches with cliff-side walls on the inside lane (Caltrans grade data, US-1 corridor). The route runs Sea Otter low at zero feet at Santa Cruz Wharf and Stinson, climbs to 245 ft at the Bixby Creek deck, drops to 90 ft at the Pfeiffer Big Sur entrance, then ladders Ragged Point at 410 ft. Class A coaches notice the climb only because mpg drops to 5-6 against a Pacific headwind that, per NOAA buoy 46028 (Cape San Martin), gusts 25-35 kt almost daily April through October.

Length caps tighten the further south you go: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park bans rigs over 32 ft total per ReserveCalifornia, but the practical limit is 24 ft because the inner loops have 25 ft turning radii and three live oaks rangers will not negotiate around. New Brighton's 4500 loop accepts 35 ft. San Simeon Creek caps trailers at 31 ft and motorhomes at 35. Carpinteria State Beach hookup loops (Santa Rosa, San Miguel) cap at 35 ft hitch-to-bumper. Malibu Beach RV Park accepts up to 60 ft on a handful of bluff sites. Two low-clearance bridges to know: the Cabrillo Highway underpass at Castroville (15 ft 3 in, per Caltrans bridge inventory) and the Stearns Wharf approach in Santa Barbara (13 ft 6 in posted) — both are off the through-route but easy to wander into.

Seasonal window: shoulder beats summer every year: the cleanest stretch is September 15 through November 5. NOAA's Monterey forecast office logs that mid-September brings the year's lowest fog frequency (clear at noon roughly 60% of days) and Big Sur highs sit 65-72 F. June through early August is the marine-layer trough: Pfeiffer Burns clears most days only after 2 pm. Winter is the wild card — atmospheric rivers (Jan-Feb 2023, Feb 2024) closed PCH at Mud Creek for weeks each time; Caltrans QuickMap is the only honest source the morning of.

Fuel and groceries: the Big Sur gap is real: between Carmel (last full station, Chevron at Rio Rd) and Cambria (Shell at Main St), 92 road miles have exactly two pump options — the Big Sur Station (limited hours, premium-only, generator-fed) and Gorda Springs Resort (open intermittently, has run dry historically). Top off at Carmel Valley Road if Carmel is closed. Albertsons in Cambria and Vons in Morro Bay are the only full grocery stores between Monterey and Pismo.

Cell coverage drops at Bixby and stays patchy through Lucia: Verizon and AT&T both publish honest coverage maps showing 0-1 bar from MP 50 (Bixby) through MP 24 (Lucia). T-Mobile is unusable south of Carmel Highlands. Starlink works at Pfeiffer Big Sur and Plaskett Creek with a clear southwest sky window. Water and dump stations on the through-route: potable water at all California State Park campgrounds (New Brighton, Pfeiffer Big Sur, San Simeon, Carpinteria — every loop). Dump stations: New Brighton (Loop 5, free for guests), San Simeon Creek (one shared, free for guests), Carpinteria (San Miguel loop, free). Big Sur has no public dump — the closest is Carmel by the River RV Park (private, $15 non-guest dump). Plan a dump at New Brighton on Day 1 and another at Carpinteria on Day 5; the gap between covers four nights, which is the comfortable limit for a 40-gallon gray on a Class C.
