Utah's Five National Parks

Four of the five Utah parks have a rule that will trip up an unprepared RV driver. At Zion, any rig wider than 7'10" or taller than 11'4" needs a $15 tunnel escort permit issued only 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at the entrance (NPS, 2026). At Bryce, vehicles over 23 feet are barred from most Rim Drive viewpoint lots between mid-April and mid-October, so you walk in from the shuttle or Sunset Campground. Capitol Reef's Cathedral Valley loop opens with a 6-to-16-inch ford of the Fremont River requiring high clearance; if you're towing a travel trailer, you leave it at Fruita. Canyonlands Needles District publishes a 28-foot combined-length cap at Squaw Flat because of the loop turn radius. Arches dropped its timed-entry reservation for the 2026 season on February 18, 2026, but Devils Garden still books out six months ahead, and rangers temporarily close the entrance once the lot fills. This 10-day loop is sequenced to put the strictest park (Zion) first, when you still have flex in your booking window, and the most parking-tolerant park (Arches) last.

Elevation, the desert is a layer-cake not a basin: The Mighty Five span 4,000 ft of vertical from Zion's Watchman Campground (3,900 ft) to Bryce's Sunset Point overlook (8,015 ft). Capitol Reef Fruita sits at 5,400 ft, Canyonlands Island in the Sky at 6,100 ft, Needles District Squaw Flat at 5,100 ft, Arches Devils Garden at 5,355 ft (NPS elevation surveys). The practical effect: a 95 F afternoon at Zion is a 71 F afternoon at Bryce on the same day. Use that. Sequence Arches and Canyonlands (hot, low) for cooler-temp dawn hikes and treat Bryce as your relief stop. Be aware that Sunset Campground at Bryce sees 25 F overnight lows in late April; your propane furnace will run for 4-6 hours.

Width and overhang truth in the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel: The 1.1-mile tunnel was bored in 1930 for 1930-era vehicles. NPS escorts you down the center line because any rig over 7'10" wide or 11'4" tall hits the wall otherwise (NPS Zion). The $15 fee covers two passes within seven days. Class A coaches with full mirrors flat-tow only between 8 am and 4:30 pm, escort closes promptly. Roof-mounted AC units add 12-18 inches above your VIN-plate height — measure with the units installed, not at the dealer's spec. The 13-mile switchback descent on the east side (SR-9) has 6.5% grade with three switchbacks tight enough that 5th-wheels over 38 ft will swing wide into the oncoming lane.

Heat, monsoon, and the slot-canyon flash-flood window: NWS Salt Lake City issues the Zion Narrows flash-flood probability at 8 am daily from May 15 through September 30. The Subway in Zion and Sulphur Creek in Capitol Reef close immediately on a "Probable" or higher reading. Monsoon storms develop from 200 miles away in 90 minutes — a clear sky over the trailhead means nothing if a cell is firing over the Pink Cliffs. Bryce Canyon at 8,000 ft also sees daily afternoon thunder in July and August; lightning has killed five hikers on the Rim Trail since 2009 (NPS incident log). Plan rim hikes before 11 am.

Water, the desert math is unforgiving: Fruita has potable fill (free for campers, $5 day-use). Watchman has fill at the entrance loop. Devils Garden has fill at the campground host station. Needles Squaw Flat has fill at the visitor center 1 mile away. Bryce Sunset has no fill on the campground loop — fill at North Campground host or at the general store. Cathedral Valley has zero water for 60 miles. Carry 12 gallons per person for any two-night dispersed stay; the BLM dispersed sites east of Arches (Willow Springs Road, Yellow Cat Road) have no facilities of any kind.

Fuel and dump station spacing: Diesel pumps that fit a 40-ft coach: Springdale (Sinclair on SR-9), Hurricane (Maverik 25 mi west of Zion), Kanab (Chevron), Hatch (Sinclair, 7 mi south of Bryce), Tropic (Conoco, 5 mi east of Bryce), Torrey (Sinclair, 11 mi west of Capitol Reef), Hanksville (Hollow Mountain), Green River (Maverik on I-70), Moab (multiple). Dump stations: Watchman ($10 non-guest), Sunset ($10), Fruita (free for guests), Devils Garden (free for guests), Squaw Flat (free for guests). The 130-mile Hanksville-to-Hatch leg has one gas pump at Bicknell — top off in Torrey.

Cell coverage, carrier dead zones: Verizon is the only carrier with usable coverage inside the parks. Bryce Canyon Lodge holds Verizon LTE; Zion Watchman, Devils Garden, Squaw Flat, and Fruita all have 1-2 bar Verizon. AT&T is dead inside Bryce, Capitol Reef, and Needles; it works at Zion Watchman and Arches entrance only. T-Mobile is dead everywhere except Springdale, Moab town, and the I-70 corridor through Green River. The Burr Trail, Cathedral Valley, and Notom-Bullfrog Road have zero coverage on any carrier for 50+ miles — Garmin inReach or Zoleo strongly recommended.
