Owners set their own dates and prices in Colorado. If nothing on the state page fits your week, leave the dates and we email you when something does.
The 23-mile stretch of US-550 between Silverton and Ouray has no guardrails on the outside lane, switchbacks tighter than 25 mph, and a high point of 11,018 ft at Red Mountain Pass summit. CDOT closes the pass multiple times each winter for avalanche mitigation - six separate planned closures hit in February through April 2025 alone, and the pass shut on Dec 6 and Dec 9, 2025 for safety work. That history sets the rule for this loop: do it between late June (after Yankee Boy Basin's upper gate opens) and mid-October (before the first sustained snow cycle). Rig math matters more than usual. South Mineral Campground caps at 35 ft and is first-come only. Morefield inside Mesa Verde caps at 46 ft. Ouray Riverside accepts up to 75 ft but riverfront sites cap at 45. Yankee Boy beyond the lower trailhead is a 4WD-only spur - leave the motorhome in town and toad-up. The loop also climbs from Durango (6,512 ft) to Red Mountain summit in under three hours, so plan a first-night low-elevation acclimation stop before pushing over the pass.
Elevation profile, the climb you cannot pre-acclimate to: Durango sits at 6,512 ft, Silverton at 9,318 ft, Coal Bank Pass at 10,640 ft, Molas Pass at 10,910 ft, and Red Mountain summit at 11,018 ft (CDOT US-550 mile-marker survey). That is a 4,506-ft net climb in 73 miles with no air-density staging stops above 9,000 ft besides Silverton itself. Naturally aspirated gas V-10s and 6.2L coaches lose roughly 3% horsepower per 1,000 ft above sea level, so a 320 hp Class C produces about 215 hp at Red Mountain summit — enough to climb in second gear at 25 mph, not enough to maintain 35 mph on the 6.5% Coal Bank ramp. Diesel pushers with turbos hold output much better but suffer EGT spikes; back off above 9,500 ft and let coolant settle at Andrews Lake pullout (MP 71.5).
Red Mountain Pass length and overhang truth: CDOT does not post a single official length limit on US-550, but the engineering reality is that the Ironton-to-Bear Creek switchbacks have 20-22 ft of useable pavement on the outside lane and a continuous 1,000+ ft vertical drop on the Uncompahgre Gorge side with no guardrail (CDOT Chief Engineer's 2022 corridor study). Single rigs over 40 ft and any combination over 55 ft hitch-to-bumper will need both lanes through Riverside Slide and Brooklyn Slide curves — meet a southbound coach at the wrong moment and one of you backs up. Toads must be flat-towable; the 6% grade with the Bear Creek runaway-truck ramp at MP 88 leaves no room for a transmission cooked from drive-mode towing.
Seasonal window, hour-by-hour reality: The pass officially stays open year-round, but the closure record (CDOT 2024-2025: 28 unplanned closures totaling 187 hours) makes shoulder-season travel a coin flip. Snow can stick at 11,000 ft any month — a freak July 4, 2023 storm dropped 4 inches at Red Mountain summit. The dependable window is July 4 through September 25. Aspen color peaks the third week of September on the Lime Creek-to-Molas section (San Juan National Forest fall report). After October 1, treat any forecast snow above 9,500 ft as a hard go/no-go signal; CDOT does not pre-position avalanche crews on weekends.
Fuel, water, dump — the spacing is brutal: Diesel pumps that fit a 35-ft motorhome exist in Durango (Sinclair on US-160), Silverton (Conoco at 1101 Greene St), Ouray (Conoco at 1370 Main), and Ridgway (Loaf 'N Jug). Nothing in between, and the 50 miles Durango-to-Silverton plus 23 miles Silverton-to-Ouray means a 15-mpg coach burns one-third of a 50-gallon tank just on the climb. Potable water and dump stations: Silverton Lakes RV Park (dump $15 for non-guests), Ouray Riverside (dump $20), and Ridgway State Park has the only free dump for state-park campers. There is no public dump in Silverton proper.
Cell coverage, carrier-specific dead zones: Verizon holds the corridor best — usable LTE at Silverton, Ouray, Ridgway, and intermittent 3G between MP 64 (Purgatory) and MP 81 (Silverton). AT&T drops at Cascade Creek (MP 62) and does not return until Silverton. T-Mobile is dead from MP 53 (Hermosa) all the way to Ridgway at MP 110 except for a one-bar window at Silverton town center. Download offline maps for Apple/Google before leaving Durango. Garmin inReach or Zoleo for SOS is not optional north of Coal Bank.
Primary sources beyond what's footnoted below: CDOT US-550 corridor data via codot.gov/travel/scenic-byways/south-central/san-juan-skyway, San Juan National Forest South Fork Ranger District (970-264-2268) for South Mineral status, Ouray County Sheriff (970-325-7272) for current pass conditions, and Mesa Verde NPS Morefield Campground reservation desk at recreation.gov. CDOT 511 (call 511 in-state) reads pass status in real time and is the only authoritative source for closures less than two hours old.
Best window
Late June through mid-October. Yankee Boy upper gate typically opens late June to early July (snow-dependent), wildflowers peak mid-July, aspens turn third week of September.
Avoid window
November through April. CDOT executes planned winter closures on Red Mountain Pass with helicopter avalanche mitigation starting around Nov 25 and continuing through April; 2025 saw multi-hour closures on Feb 21, Mar 6, Mar 19, Apr 5, Nov 25, Dec 6, and Dec 9.
What official guides do not tell you
US-550 Red Mountain Pass winter closures
CDOT executes planned winter maintenance closures on Red Mountain Pass starting around Nov 25 each year using helicopter avalanche mitigation. 2025 saw multi-hour pass closures on Feb 21, Mar 6, Mar 19, Apr 5, Nov 25, Dec 6, and Dec 9. Real-time status is published on COtrip.org - check the morning of any winter or shoulder-season drive. Closures can also be triggered with under one hour's notice for snow, ice, rockfall, or crash recovery.

Ouray County and USFS confirm Yankee Boy Basin (FSR 853 / Camp Bird Rd) requires medium-to-high clearance to reach the basin and short-wheelbase 4WD with high clearance beyond the lower Mt Sneffels trailhead. The upper gate stays locked until snow melts - typically late June to early July. County road crews begin clearing in May with target opening by July 4. No motorhome or travel trailer should attempt the road past the lower switchbacks.

All ranger-led cliff dwelling tours at Mesa Verde require a Recreation.gov ticket. The booking window opens 14 days in advance at 8:00 a.m. MDT on a rolling daily basis from May through October. Cliff Palace caps at 50 per tour, Balcony House at 35, Long House at 30, Square Tower House at 10, and Mug House at 10. Tours sell out the same morning they release, especially on weekends and holidays. Cancellations release tickets up to 2 hours before tour start.

Morefield Campground inside Mesa Verde National Park is operated by Aramark, not the NPS reservation system. Bookings go through 1-800-449-2288 or visitmesaverde.com - Recreation.gov does not handle Morefield sites. RVs over 46 ft are not permitted. Full-hookup sites are limited to 15 of the 267 total. The campground runs Apr 24 to Oct 18 for full service in 2026, with limited primitive shoulder windows Apr 16-24 and Oct 19-25.

South Mineral Campground (USFS San Juan National Forest, 4 miles west of Silverton on FSR 585) is first-come, first-served only - no reservation system. The maximum RV length is 35 ft, equipment must fit in the parking spur, and there are no hookups. Water, trash, and pit toilets operate roughly June through August. Sep through May the campground has no services at all. Plan to arrive by mid-morning Thursday for weekend sites in July and August.

Effective Sep 1 through May 31, Colorado's Must Carry Law requires commercial vehicles over 16,000 lbs GVWR to carry chains or approved alternative traction devices (AutoSocks, auto chains, or sanders) on US-550 and other designated mountain corridors. Private RVs are exempt from the Must Carry requirement but become subject to Code 15 (chain-up) and Code 16 (chain law for all vehicles) when CDOT activates them. A chain-up area exists at the base of Red Mountain Pass on both sides.

Best Time to Drive
June through September. The highway can be closed by snow in winter. Fall colors peak in late September.
RV Size Recommendations
Class B, Class C up to 28 ft, or truck-and-trailer under 35 ft. Class A over 40 ft can do the loop but must skip South Mineral and stage from Riverside Resort or KOA. No rig should attempt Yankee Boy Basin past the lower trailhead - bring a toad or rent a Jeep in Ouray or Silverton.
