Why the 35-foot limit exists
CO-82 was originally a wagon road over the Continental Divide built in the 1880s. The modern paved surface was completed in 1967 but the alignment retained the historic switchback geometry. Several hairpin turns have radii under 60 feet, which is below what a 40-foot Class A motorhome can navigate without crossing the centerline.
CDOT measured the radii against modern vehicle wheelbases and posted 35 feet as the maximum length that can stay in its lane on every curve. The limit applies to combined length — a 28-ft motorhome towing an 8-ft trailer exceeds 35 feet combined.
Enforcement is signed, occasional spot-check, and primarily self-enforced. Drivers of larger rigs who attempt the pass risk being unable to complete a turn and blocking the road. The detour via I-70 is universally recommended for any rig exceeding the limit.

Aspen tourism portrays Independence Pass as a casual scenic drive. The 35-foot limit and summer-only season constraints are usually footnoted rather than highlighted. For RV renters, that omission matters — many large rigs cannot do this route at all.
What CO-82 does deliver for the qualifying vehicle is one of the most direct experiences of Continental Divide alpine driving in the lower 48. Independence Lake at the summit, the Independence ghost town just below, and the cinematic descent into the Roaring Fork valley make this a genuine RV bucket-list crossing if your rig fits.
The detour story is also worth telling honestly. I-70 west of Denver is one of the most heavily congested mountain freeways in the country. Big-rig travelers detoured to I-70 from Independence Pass should plan for ski-traffic delays if travelling November-April.
