Arizona Canyon Loop: 8 Days Sedona to Grand Canyon to Page

Three booking walls decide whether this loop happens: Mather Campground caps rigs at 30 feet and opens reservations 6 months out (the only in-park hookup option, Trailer Village, opens 13 months out and routinely sells through summer by January). Antelope Canyon is tour-only on Navajo Nation land, and Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) issues just 64 permits per day across two lotteries - the Advanced runs 4 months ahead, the Daily closes two days before your hike. The Sedona Shuttle replaces private parking at Cathedral Rock and Soldiers Pass Thursday through Sunday in season, and SR 89A through Oak Creek Canyon posts a 30-foot length limit on the switchbacks. Plan around a 110F July-August window in Page, snow possible on the South Rim through April, and Hermit Road closed to private vehicles March 1 through November 30. This 8-day route threads those constraints in a counterclockwise loop: Sedona, Williams staging, South Rim, Desert View, Page, Marble Canyon, back through Flagstaff.

Elevation: this loop crosses 6,300 vertical feet in eight days, and your radiator notices. Sedona sits at 4,350 ft (USGS Verde Valley quadrangle). The climb through Oak Creek Canyon on SR 89A gains 2,500 ft in 12 miles, topping at the Oak Creek Vista at 6,400 ft. Flagstaff staging sits at 6,910 ft. Tusayan (gateway to the South Rim) is 6,612 ft. Mather Campground itself is 6,820 ft, and Desert View on the East Rim climbs to 7,438 ft. The descent off the rim to Page via US-89 drops you to 4,118 ft at Lake Powell — that's a 3,320-foot loss in roughly 90 minutes. Marble Canyon at Lees Ferry sits at 3,170 ft, the route's low point. NPS reports the Wahweap to South Rim gain reverses your engine load: a Class A on the Bitter Springs grade climbs at 5-6 mpg with coolant temps climbing 15-20 F above normal. Run grade-cooling fans and skip cruise control on US-89.

Length constraints, park by park: Mather's hard cap is 30 ft total (NPS, South Rim Mather page) — measured rig only, not combined. Trailer Village's pull-throughs accept up to 50 ft and are the only full-hookup in the park; Desert View Campground (East Rim) is tent-only for 2026 per NPS season notes. The Sedona AZ-179 corridor handles any rig, but SR 89A through Oak Creek Canyon posts the 30-ft limit at Sterling Pass and the switchbacks above Slide Rock — ADOT signs and rangers turn around longer rigs at the Indian Gardens scale (ADOT NW District restriction). Vermilion Cliffs / Marble Canyon area (Lees Ferry NPS) accommodates rigs up to 40 ft on the upper loop, 22 ft on the lower. Antelope Canyon parking handles RVs up to 40 ft on the Upper Antelope side, no RVs on the Lower side per Navajo Parks. Williams Circle Pines KOA: 75 ft pull-throughs available.

Seasonal window — early October through mid-November, then mid-April through May: the cleanest run is October 5 through November 8. South Rim daytime highs sit 55-68 F (NWS Flagstaff), monsoons are done, lightning closures on the Bright Angel and South Kaibab trailheads have ended, and Page cools to 70-78 F. Spring window is April 20 through May 20 — comparable temps with longer Lake Powell days. Avoid mid-June through mid-September: Page regularly tops 105-110 F (NWS Page-Page Municipal AP records), monsoon storms close slot canyon tours daily 1-5 pm, South Rim parking lots fill by 9 a.m., and Mather Campground sells out two months ahead. Avoid December through mid-March on the South Rim — snow and ice cycles close the East Rim entrance multiple times each winter per NPS conditions reports.

Fuel — distances that catch rigs unprepared: Sedona has multiple stations (Shell at 89A and 179, Chevron at Tlaquepaque). Cottonwood and Camp Verde have full services. Williams has every brand at I-40 Exits 161 and 165. Tusayan has one expensive Shell and a Maverik just inside the park gate. The critical stretch is Tusayan to Page, 132 miles with exactly two fuel options: Cameron Trading Post (Conoco, the only full station between, $1.20-$1.80/gal premium over Flagstaff prices) and the Gap Conoco at the Echo Cliffs (intermittent hours). Top off at Tusayan and at the Page Safeway (cheapest in town). Diesel pumps are scarce off US-89; the Maverik in Page is the most reliable. Marble Canyon to Flagstaff (Day 7) is 130 miles with one station — Marble Canyon Lodge Chevron — so leave Lees Ferry with a full tank.

Cell coverage — Verizon best, AT&T good in towns, T-Mobile spotty: Verizon has reliable coverage at all campgrounds on this loop. AT&T is strong in Sedona, Flagstaff, Williams, Tusayan, and Page, but drops on US-89 between Cameron and Bitter Springs (60-mile gap). T-Mobile users report 0-2 bars from Cameron to Marble Canyon and zero service at Lees Ferry Campground. Cell service is fully dead inside the Inner Canyon and on the Antelope Canyon tour routes (slot geometry blocks signal). NPS recommends carrying an InReach or PLB for Bright Angel descents.

Water and dump stations: Mather has a free dump station and potable fill at the campground entrance (NPS Mather page). Trailer Village has full hookups at each site (water, sewer, 50-amp). Desert View has potable water but no dump in 2026. Wahweap Campground in Page has full hookups and a dump on every loop. Lees Ferry Campground has potable water and a free dump at the entrance per NPS. The Sedona end has limited public water — fill at Dead Horse Ranch State Park ($5 non-guest dump and fill). Distant Drums RV Resort in Camp Verde has full hookups. Plan dumps every 3-4 days: Sedona (Dead Horse), Mather or Trailer Village (Day 3-4), Wahweap (Day 5-6), and Lees Ferry (Day 7).
