Timing
March through June and October through November are the windows: highs of 68-78 F, low rain, and a manageable marine layer. August is the odd month out — the marine layer compresses against inland heat, and the desert side runs above 110 F daily — while Santa Ana wind events color September to November. The events calendar bites harder than the weather: Comic-Con (typically late July) books every RV park in the county about 12 months ahead with Campland weekend rates at 2-3x, Del Mar's summer race meet fills North County parks 90 days out, and the Anza-Borrego wildflower bloom (roughly March to mid-April, weather-dependent) fills the desert campground 60-90 days ahead.

The single oasis the city guide names: 553 full-hookup sites on Mission Bay under a long-running city concession, rigs to 70 feet, direct beach access, around $120 a night on a 12-month window. It is the only place in San Diego proper where a motorhome, the bay, and legality coexist — which is why event weeks price it like a resort.
The cliff-top state park 35 miles north: 45 sites over the ocean with water-and-electric on a selection of them, rigs to 35 feet, about $50 a night on ReserveCalifornia's 6-month window. The dump is free for registered guests. If falling asleep to surf is the point of the trip, this is the booking to fight for.
The Coronado-side alternative 10 miles out: no hookups, rigs to 40 feet, ocean access, and a dump station at about $35 a night. It trades amenities for position — a bay-and-ocean sandbar most visitors only drive across — and its 6-month window is usually softer than the northern beach park's.
The desert leg, 88 miles northeast: water-and-electric on select sites for rigs to 35 feet at $35 a night inside California's largest desert state park. Time it late October through April — summer runs above 110 F — and book 60-90 days out if your dates touch the wildflower bloom, which converges on the park fast.

Good to know
Not legally over 22 feet long or 7 feet tall: SDMC §86.0139 prohibits it between 2 and 6 a.m. without a permit, and police write same-night citations on the Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and La Jolla corridors. §63.20.18 separately bans vehicle camping in city parks and beach lots from sunset to 8 a.m. Tows run $400-800. Campland or the state parks are the answer.
Completely, if your dates overlap. The city guide is blunt: all San Diego County RV parks book about 12 months ahead of the convention (typically late July), and Campland weekend rates run 2-3x normal. Either book a year out, shift the trip a week in either direction, or plan the desert leg for that stretch.
Dumps: Campland ($15), Santee Lakes ($10), South Carlsbad (free for registered guests), and the Mission Bay boat-launch dump on Quivira Way at $5 — the cheapest in the city. Propane: U-Haul Mission Valley handles rigs to 36 feet. Diesel and DEF: Pilot/Flying J at Otay Mesa with full big-rig pull-throughs.
