Renters pay one transparent 10% service fee at checkout plus tax, with no drip pricing, and cancellation is free for 48 hours.
Timing
March through June and October through November: 68-78 F, low rain, campgrounds bookable on their standard windows. Watch three calendar traps in order of severity. Comic-Con (typically late July) books county RV parks a year ahead — with a trailer you cannot improvise around it. The Anza-Borrego bloom (March to mid-April, weather-dependent) fills the desert campground 60-90 days out, exactly when the towable day-trip pattern wants to go there. And Del Mar race days (mid-July to early September) jam I-5 north of Sorrento Valley from 4 to 7 p.m. — the wrong window to be towing 35 feet of trailer up the coast to Carlsbad.

Unhitch here and the whole trip opens up: 70-foot full-hookup sites on Mission Bay at about $120 a night, with the beach directly off the site. The tow vehicle then handles the city — which matters in a metro where §86.0139 makes street-parking anything over 22 feet a 2 a.m. citation. Twelve-month window; summer books early.
The inland value base: full hookups to 70 feet across a seven-lake preserve at about $80 a night with a 12-month window. It sits 17 miles east — the right side of the county for a trailer that plans desert day trips, cutting the Anza-Borrego run meaningfully compared to a coastal start.
The cliff-top prize with a hard constraint: 35-foot maximum, water-and-electric on select sites, about $50 a night on a 6-month ReserveCalifornia window. Size the rental trailer to that cap deliberately — a 30-foot travel trailer gets ocean-bluff camping that no 40-foot fifth-wheel in the catalog can book.
The desert overnight for the ambitious version of the trip: 88 miles out, trailers to 35 feet, water-and-electric on select sites at $35. Tow out for two nights in California's largest desert state park, late October through April only — the guide puts summer there above 110 F daily, no place for a parked trailer.

Within limits — San Diego's Land Development Code §141.0405 imposes setback and screening rules on RVs parked at residences, and the city guide notes driveway stays past a few days draw code enforcement on complaint. Street parking over 22 feet falls under §86.0139's overnight ban. A campground site is the version of this that never generates a citation.
Depends on the trip you want. Campland and Santee Lakes take combinations to 70 feet, so size is no constraint there. But the beach state parks cap hard — 35 feet at South Carlsbad, 40 at Silver Strand — and Borrego Palm Canyon caps at 35. A 30-35 foot trailer books everything on this page; a big fifth-wheel books half of it.

Leave the trailer hooked up at Campland or Santee Lakes and run the 88 miles to the desert in the tow vehicle alone, or tow out for a two-night stay at Borrego Palm Canyon ($35, W/E on select sites, 35-ft cap). Either way, keep desert legs between late October and April; summer out there exceeds 110 F.
