What qualifies
A towable is the camper you pull behind your own truck or SUV instead of driving. You supply the tow vehicle; the host supplies the living space. That split usually means a lower nightly rate than a motorhome, plus the freedom to unhitch at the campsite and keep your truck for day trips. PickRV covers four common types. Popup and teardrop trailers are light and simple — easy to pull to a state park lake or a weekend festival. Timing
Book mid-October through April. Tampa's shoulder season carries the trip: comfortable weather, open availability outside one festival weekend, and no tropical-weather exposure. The exception to plan around is Gasparilla (typically late January) — bay-area closures plus regional camping at 90% — which the guide says to pre-book at least 90 days out. June through September is the season a trailer specifically should skip: hurricane evacuations stack I-275 northbound for 6-12 hours, and re-hitching a trailer into that queue is the worst version of the problem. Summer heat indexes of 95-105 F also punish unhitched trailers sitting in full sun with modest electrical service.

Leave the trailer on its site at the state park and cover Lettuce Lake, the city, and the scenic corridors with just the tow vehicle, burning half the fuel a motorhome would.
The northbound Gulf-side route the guide flags for scenic value — and the corridor that turns a Tampa trailer weekend into a coast trip, since Tampa stages the Gulf Coast leg toward the Big Bend. With a trailer you get the choice: tow the whole rig north, or run the corridor unhitched as a long day drive.

Good to know
Not beyond the limit. Tampa Code Sec. 15-65 restricts RVs on residential streets past 48 hours, with oversized-vehicle restrictions in the Ybor City historic district on top — and the practical read in the city guide is that larger rigs should simply plan to be at Hillsborough River State Park by the posted cutoff rather than testing the window.
