The closest legitimate RV options inside LA County are Dockweiler RV Park (LA County Beaches & Harbors, on the sand at El Segundo) and Malibu Beach RV Park (private, 25 mi west of LAX on Pacific Coast Highway). Hollywood RV Park (commercial, 18 mi north in Studio City) handles 25-ft Class C and smaller.
Plan dump and propane outside the LA Basin — try Castaic Lake to the north or San Diego to the south — and treat the LA Basin as day-use only via Dockweiler or Malibu base camps.
When to come
Best: March through May and October through November: Highs 65-78 F, low rain, marine layer manageable. Trade-off: Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend campgrounds saturated.
Skip: August: heat-dome events push San Fernando Valley above 100 F daily; September Santa Ana wind events trigger PSPS (Public Safety Power Shutoff) at Malibu and Castaic.
Your first hour in Los Angeles
Before you leave the lot
- Top off propane at Castaic Loves or AmeriGas Sun Valley BEFORE crossing into the basin — West LA propane access tight.
- Buy a California State Parks day-use pass if visiting Leo Carrillo or Topanga SP.
Before you park overnight
- Do not park overnight on any LA city street — LAMC §85.02 and §80.69.4 enforced citywide.

- Confirm Dockweiler, Malibu, or Hollywood RV Park reservation BEFORE driving into LA; walk-ups effectively impossible.
- Fuel diesel + DEF at Loves Castaic (I-5 exit 173) BEFORE descending into the basin.
- Plan PCH driving outside 4-7 p.m. rush window; PCH between Santa Monica and Malibu congested.
- Check airnow.gov for Santa Ana wind PSPS Sep-Nov; Malibu RV Park may run on backup power during events.
The mistake renters make
Assuming any Walmart, Cabela's, or shopping center inside LA County allows overnight RV parking 'because no signs say no.' LAMC §85.02 enforcement extends to private lots when complaint-driven; LAPD response can include tow at owner expense plus citation. Tow + impound in LA averages $400-$800 plus daily storage.
