Planned pricing: Class C motorhomes in Missouri will start at $89/night. Full Missouri cost breakdown — fuel, camping & taxPickRV is not an insurer and does not sell coverage. Trips run on the coverage you and the host agree on before pickup — your own personal auto / RV policy where it covers rental use, or the host's own commercial policy per their certificate of insurance. Confirm with your insurer before the trip.
RV rental insurance, explainedPickRV defaults to flexible cancellation: full refund up to 48 hours before pickup. Owner-set strict listings show explicit terms before checkout. Tax (standard state rate) auto-refunds with the booking.
Most Missouri listings are paved-road only per owner terms. The off-road premium tier (Class B and converted Sprinters) grows as hosts with off-road-rated rigs onboard.
The Missouri field guide
Mild springs and colorful falls are ideal for Ozark and river RVing; summers are hot and humid while winters bring ice.
Watch out: Tornadoes and severe storms are possible spring through summer. Summer humidity is high.
Shoulder-season tip: March and November offer lower rates but can have frost, ice, or heavy rain affecting gravel roads.

About Missouri · written by people who've actually rented here

Missouri is the only US state with both major American rivers (Mississippi + Missouri) converging within its borders (St Louis), AND the only state where the Gateway Arch (630 ft — the tallest US national monument, NPS) commemorates westward expansion. PickRV's Missouri coverage clusters around St Louis (the I-70/I-44/I-55 hub), Branson (the country-music live-show capital with 50+ theaters — Branson Lakes Area Convention Bureau), and Kansas City (BBQ + Negro Leagues Baseball Museum + Country Club Plaza). Vehicle culture leans pontoon + RV combos because Lake of the Ozarks (the largest manmade lake in the US by shoreline at 1,150 mi — Ameren Missouri) is the central RV-pontoon scene.
What this state demands of your rig
Missouri caps non-commercial RVs at 14 ft height + 8 ft 6 in width (RSMo §304.170). The Gateway Arch tram (NPS) has weight + size limits — leave the rig at the riverfront RV-friendly lots.
Mark Twain National Forest (US Forest Service) backcountry roads narrow to single-lane gravel — Class B and small Class C only on the Eleven Point + Current River corridors.
Missouri state-park generator hours vary by park; typical is 10 PM – 7 AM (Missouri State Parks, DNR).
The Lake of the Ozarks Bagnell Dam Strip is RV-friendly but most Class A motorhomes over 35 ft will struggle on the historic-strip approach roads.
When to come
Best window: April through May + September through October. Summer (June–August) hits 95°F + humidity. Branson's holiday season (Silver Dollar City Christmas + Branson Christmas) runs early November through January and spikes RV demand.
Fall foliage on the Ozark Plateau peaks October 20 – November 5.
The 2024 total solar eclipse path crossed southeastern Missouri (Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Carbondale IL all in totality per NASA Eclipse Bulletin); 2026-2028 paths do not return.
Tornado risk April through June; NWS St Louis + Kansas City + Springfield + Pleasant Hill Forecast Offices issue frequent watches.
How to think about your trip
Classic 9-day Missouri loop: St Louis (Gateway Arch + Forest Park + City Museum + Anheuser-Busch brewery tour) → drive west on I-44 → Cuba (Route 66 town) → Lebanon → Springfield (Bass Pro Shops Wonders of Wildlife — largest wildlife attraction in the world) → Branson → Eureka Springs AR (3 hr south) → return → Lake of the Ozarks (Bagnell Dam Strip, Ha Ha Tonka State Park) → Jefferson City (state capital) → Columbia (University of Missouri) → Kansas City (Negro Leagues Baseball Museum + Country Club Plaza + Boulevard Brewing) → return St Louis.
For Ozark backcountry: a separate 4-day loop into Mark Twain National Forest based out of Eminence (Current + Jacks Fork rivers — Ozark National Scenic Riverways, NPS).
Three things only Missouri can claim
01
The Gateway Arch in St Louis is 630 ft tall — the tallest national monument in the US and the world's tallest arch (NPS)
02
Lake of the Ozarks has 1,150 mi of shoreline — more than the California Pacific Coast (Ameren Missouri operates Bagnell Dam)
03
Ozark National Scenic Riverways was the first US national-park-system unit to protect a free-flowing river system (Current + Jacks Fork, designated 1964 — NPS)
How Missouri breaks down regionally
Four Missouris. St Louis Metro (east): Gateway Arch, Forest Park, Anheuser-Busch, Cardinals baseball. Lake of the Ozarks + Central: pontoon + RV resort country, the state capital at Jefferson City. Branson + Southwest (Ozarks): country music live theaters, Silver Dollar City, Big Cedar Lodge. Kansas City Metro (west): BBQ, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Country Club Plaza, Chiefs football.
Signature routes
Historic Route 66 (Missouri segment)
St Louis → Rolla → Springfield → Joplin (~317 mi of the original 1926 alignment)
Ozark National Scenic Riverways MO-19 + MO-106
Eminence → Salem → Van Buren (~67 mi through the only national-park-system-protected wild river system in the eastern US)
Great River Road MO-79 + MO-94
St Louis → Hannibal → Quincy IL (~165 mi along the Mississippi past Mark Twain Boyhood Home)
Ha Ha Tonka State Park loop
Camdenton → Linn Creek (loops past castle ruins + sinkholes — 17 mi)
St Louis pickup keeps you 3 hours from the Lake of the Ozarks and 4 hours from Branson — browse PickRV Missouri rigs sized for the Gateway Arch riverfront and Mark Twain National Forest gravel.

Missouri open-container law (RSMo §577.017) is one of the more permissive states — passengers may consume alcohol but driver may not. However, federal-funded highways may apply stricter rules. Recreational marijuana is legal under Missouri law (Amendment 3, effective Dec 8 2022) — possession up to 3 oz permitted for adults 21+; consumption in a moving vehicle prohibited. Tornado risk April through June — NWS-broadcast warnings always heeded; many state parks have designated tornado shelters. Lake of the Ozarks boating safety: Missouri State Highway Patrol (Water Patrol Division) enforces BWI strictly during peak weekends.
Insider tip: Ozark National Scenic Riverways (NPS — the first US national-park-system unit to protect a free-flowing river system per nps.gov/ozar, designated 1964) Current + Jacks Fork rivers have FOUR developed campgrounds (Akers, Pulltite, Round Spring, Alley Spring). The under-shared truth: Alley Spring's restored 1894 grist mill is FREE to tour AND the spring itself produces 81 million gallons of 56°F water daily — perfect summer tubing destination at zero ticket cost.
Insider tip: Branson's holiday season (Silver Dollar City Christmas, silverdollarcity.com) spikes RV demand early November through December. The under-shared truth: Branson's '76 Strip' winter weekday rates run 40-50% under Silver Dollar weekend peaks AND the live-theater season extends through January (the 50+ theaters do not close — most run shows year-round per explorebranson.com).
Insider tip: Gateway Arch National Park (NPS — 630 ft per nps.gov/jeff, the tallest US national monument) tram tickets sell out 90 days ahead via timed-entry. The under-shared truth: the under-Arch Museum of Westward Expansion is FREE without tram ticket AND the riverfront RV-friendly Casino Queen RV Park (East St Louis IL) has the closest legal overnight RV parking with shuttle access — Missouri-side downtown has no overnight RV options.

Editor's note · Updated 2026-06-04
The 12-month state-park scramble, the Ozark riverways' sewer-free reality, an Arch garage that shears tall rigs, and the flash-flood crossings that strand motorhomes.
Since June 2020, Missouri State Parks take reservations a full 12 months in advance (the window opens 7am CST, bookable up to 7pm CST the day before arrival) through icampmo.com or 877-422-6766. Eight of the highest-demand parks — Big Lake, Lake of the Ozarks, St. Joe, Table Rock, Mark Twain, Wakonda, Wallace and Watkins Mill — require a 2-night minimum on weekend reservations (Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun). Camping is also capped at 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period at one park, so set a 12-month alarm and don't plan a single Saturday night at the lakes.
Source: Missouri DNR / Missouri State Parks — camping reservation system
The three developed campgrounds inside Ozark National Scenic Riverways (Alley Spring near Eminence, Round Spring, and Big Spring near Van Buren) offer electric and water hookups at select sites but have NO sewer hookups — you dump at a station near each campground entrance. Alley Spring's RV sites cap at 35 feet, and the water systems are turned off October 15 through April 14. These NPS sites also reserve only 6 months out on recreation.gov, not the 12-month state-park window, so plan tank capacity and book on a different timeline.

Gateway Arch National Park operates no parking of its own, and the adjacent Stadium East Parking Garage has a hard 6'8" clearance — it won't admit an RV of any kind. Oversized-vehicle parking is limited curbside on Leonor K. Sullivan Drive south of the Poplar Street Bridge, about a third of a mile from the Arch; call the park's operator at 877-982-1410 before arriving with a rig. The realistic play is to base the motorhome at a full-hookup park outside downtown St. Louis and rideshare in.
Source: NPS — Gateway Arch National Park parking (Stadium East Garage clearance)
NPS closes the Current River and Jacks Fork to non-motorized boats at 2 feet above normal stage and warns that flash floods are a risk every month of the year; the November 2024 flood dumped 9-12 inches and pushed the upper Current to historic levels, washing out the Round Spring low-water crossing. Most flooding deaths happen in vehicles swept off flooded roadways, so never drive an RV across a low-water crossing that's running over the slab. Check the river-level status (nps.gov/ozar, or park HQ 573-323-4236) before you commit a rig and a float to the same day.

Missouri runs a graduated personal income tax topping at 4.95% on net rental (Missouri Department of Revenue, 2024 brackets, with Senate Bill 3 phasing the top toward 4.5%) — among the lowest in the lower Midwest and well below Illinois's 4.95% flat-plus-local. The 1.5-million-acre Mark Twain National Forest (USFS) allows free dispersed camping outside developed sites with a 14-day cap, no permit, and direct trailhead access on the 350-mile Ozark Trail — the cheapest legal RV boondock between the Ozark Riverways (fact above) and the Smokies. The natural multi-state pivot: pickup in St. Louis → I-44 west into Mark Twain NF → US-60 east → Memphis → onto /road-trips/natchez-trace-parkway/ at Tupelo for the Trace's 55-ft cap, OR east on I-40 into /road-trips/great-smokies-7day/ via Cades Cove. Verify district-office fire restrictions before lighting anything in late summer.

Missouri DOR routes motor homes through statewide license offices but still requires county personal property tax payment plus a safety inspection first. The dual state-county gate is a Missouri hallmark that catches first-time registrants. Data as of June 2026 — pay county tax and pass inspection before the license office visit.

Planning from abroad
Touring the US from another country? For most rentals a valid driver's license from your home country is accepted for tourism — an International Driving Permit is often recommended (and required by some states or hosts when your license isn't in English), so bring both plus your passport. The listed price is the all-in host price shown before you book, with no drip-pricing surprises at checkout. Confirm each host's pickup requirements before you book.
