An overnight stay needs TWO permits plus utility fees — not one campsite price

Kansas State Parks require a Vehicle Permit ($5/day or $25/year) at every park, AND a separate Camping Permit for any overnight stay — the camping fee does not include park entry. On top of both, hookup (utility) fees for electric, water, and sewer are billed per night even if you hold an annual camping permit, plus a per-stay processing fee. Budget for all three line items, not the single 'campsite price' most booking sites quote.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve won't let you drive your RV onto the prairie

At Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (2480B KS-177, Strong City, in Chase County), no driving of personal vehicles is permitted on the preserve itself — the backcountry ranch road is off-limits to your rig. The Visitor Center lot does fit buses and RVs, but to see the interior you ride a ranger van/bus tour (reservations 620-273-8494) or hike. Overnight camping is also banned in the preserve; the nearest RV base is around Emporia, ~16 miles east.

Monument Rocks is private land on a dirt road that turns to muck after rain

The Monument Rocks chalk pyramids sit on PRIVATE land in Gove County, about 25 miles south of Oakley off US-83. The owners allow free public access sunrise to sunset only — no climbing, no fossil collecting, no camping — and the final stretch is gravel/dirt with no restrooms, no water, and no cell service. Those roads turn into a door-deep rutted mess after rain and can be impassable, so check the forecast, fuel and provision in Oakley first, and never attempt the approach in a heavy rig on a wet day.
