Since 1972, the Konza Prairie Biological Station has produced the longest continuous experimental dataset on any North American grassland ecosystem — 8,616 acres of native Flint Hills tallgrass prairie jointly managed by Kansas State University's Division of Biology and The Nature Conservancy, with permanent watershed experiments testing fire frequency (1-, 2-, 4-, 10-, and 20-year burn intervals across replicated catchments) and bison-vs-cattle grazing impacts under the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research network per the Konza LTER published bibliography. The result is the world's most-cited grassland ecology research site, and the 5.7-mile Konza Prairie Nature Trail offers public access to the Lower Loop with self-guided interpretive signage. Riley County's 610 sq mi wrap Manhattan (population 54,000, the 'Little Apple' — a self-described nickname riffing on New York's Big Apple, the county seat and home of Kansas State University), Fort Riley (a US Army cavalry installation founded 1853, still active as the home of the 1st Infantry Division — public access requires a base pass through the Fort Riley Visitor Control Center), and the southwestern shoreline of Tuttle Creek Lake (a 12,500-acre US Army Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoir, the largest USACE reservoir in Kansas per the Kansas City District inventory).

Tuttle Creek State Park (Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks) accepts rigs to 60 ft with electric hookups on 250+ sites split across the River Pond, Cedar Ridge, Spillway, and Randolph campgrounds; reservations open 6 months out through the KDWP ReserveAmerica portal. The Flint Hills tallgrass prairie ecosystem is the largest remaining intact tallgrass prairie in North America — over 99% of the original North American tallgrass prairie was plowed for corn-and-wheat agriculture between 1850 and 1900 per US Geological Survey grassland-conversion data, leaving only the chert-rich Flint Hills bedrock unfarmable and therefore preserved. City of Manhattan Municipal Code §34-1115 prohibits overnight RV street parking citywide, and Kansas State University's football tailgating policy at Bill Snyder Family Stadium permits RV staging only in specific lots with advance pass. The Sunset Zoo (a 56-acre AZA-accredited city zoo) and the Flint Hills Discovery Center anchor the in-town visitor circuit.
