Beat the booking premium during peak US events 2026-2028

PickRV's demand-multiplier dataset (from `src/data/stateEvents.ts`) breaks down recommended booking lead-time by event size. The rough rule: multiply the demand multiplier by 2 to get weeks of lead-time.

• Cheyenne Frontier Days (8× demand): book 16+ weeks ahead
• F1 USGP Austin (7× demand): book 14+ weeks ahead
• Burning Man (7× demand): book 14+ weeks ahead
• Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (8× demand): book 16+ weeks ahead
• Kentucky Derby weekend (6× demand): book 12+ weeks ahead
• Indianapolis 500 (7× demand): book 14+ weeks ahead
• Mardi Gras (6× demand): book 12+ weeks ahead, often 26+ weeks for downtown New Orleans
• Coachella weekend 1 + 2 (5× demand): book 10+ weeks ahead

For events 1,000+ mi from your home and ≤7 days long, fly-in + destination rental often beats the cost of driving + fuel + drop-fees, even after airfare. Threshold math: $400 round-trip airfare + $1,200 destination RV rental for 5 nights = $1,600 total, vs $500 fuel + $800 own-rig rental + $200 wear = $1,500 — close, but flies cost you ~24 hr of driving each way you can spend at the event.

Destination pickup hubs that consistently have inventory: Las Vegas (Burning Man via Reno alternative), Austin (F1 USGP + SXSW), Louisville (Kentucky Derby), Indianapolis (Indy 500), Albuquerque (Balloon Fiesta), New Orleans (Mardi Gras + Jazz Fest).

For most peak events, the premium is concentrated within 30 mi of the venue. Park 60-100 mi out + drive in (or use event shuttle) and the rental cost drops 40-60 %. The trade-off: 1-2 hours of driving each way + parking-lot logistics.

Example: F1 USGP at Circuit of the Americas (Austin). Direct-on-site RV camping costs $1,500+/weekend. Same weekend in Marble Falls (60 mi west) drops to $400-600/weekend with shuttle to COTA from designated lots.
