Glade Top Trail is the only USFS-designated National Forest Scenic Byway in Missouri — one of just 33 such designations across the entire national-forest system — a 23-mile gravel ridge-line drive across the Ava Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest that follows the watershed divide between the Bryant Creek and Beaver Creek drainages. The byway runs through Ozark glade-and-savanna habitat that's nearly unique in eastern North America (limestone-bedrock open meadows interspersed with stunted post oak), maintained by USFS prescribed-burn rotation that mimics the pre-settlement fire regime. Rigs over 22 ft are prohibited on the byway per USFS posting at both Caney Lookout (north) and Longrun (south) entrances — switchback geometry, blind hairpins, and the absence of any turnaround past the first mile make this a hard length cap, not advisory. Douglas County covers 821 sq mi in the heart of the Ozark Plateau between Springfield (Greene County) and the Arkansas line, with Ava (population 2,930, the county seat on MO-14) as the only full-service town carrying grocery, fuel, propane, and 24-hour emergency services.

Population density runs roughly 16 persons per square mile — Douglas is one of the most-rural counties in Missouri, with the entire county under a single zip code service area for stretches and no incorporated municipality larger than Ava. Mark Twain NF dispersed-camping at signed pullouts on the Ava Ranger District accepts rigs to 22 ft only, with 14-day stay limits and the standard fire-restriction-calendar published at the Ava Ranger Station on MO-5. Noblett Lake Recreation Area inside the Mark Twain NF holds a small developed campground (24 sites, rigs to 28 ft, electric hookups) on a 26-acre USFS impoundment, the canonical RV-friendly base inside the forest. Bryant Creek and Beaver Creek both run as Ozark National Scenic Riverways designation-eligible streams (the official ONSR boundary stops south at Current River in adjacent Carter County) — float and float-fishing seasons are May through October.
