How National Forest camping works
Dispersed by default, dry-camp by norm, MVUM by law
National Forests run on a different logic than the parks. Outside the developed loops you can usually park the rig on Forest Service roads — subject to the ranger district's Motor Vehicle Use Map — and almost every developed campground is dry-camp only.
Length caps are published per campground, not per forest, and the access road usually matters more than the sign at the loop — a 35-ft cap means little after fifteen gravel miles of single-lane switchbacks. Each guide states the real ceiling, the hookup tier, dump-station status, and the season the water is actually running.
Hookups are the exception, not the rule: the modal USFS site is dry. Where electric shows up it is a concessioner loop, and we say so. Every fact on every page traces to at least three official fs.usda.gov or recreation.gov pages — no borrowed stock, no invented numbers.
