About this area
The Long Trail crosses 273 miles of Vermont ridge from Massachusetts to Quebec, and 90 miles of it cut through the Green Mountain NF where USFS shelters and trailheads anchor the rig-friendly access plan. Hapgood Pond, Greendale, Grout Pond, and Moosalamoo are the four main developed loops — all dry-camp, all capped between 24 and 30 feet, all with access roads narrow enough that a long fifth-wheel needs to back-out at the dead-ends. Dispersed camping is allowed along most forest roads under the GMNF MVUM (the 200-ft setback rule from streams applies). No NPS-grade dump stations inside the forest; closest are at private campgrounds along VT 100. Vermont's mud-season closure (late March – early May) shuts most gravel access; the practical season runs Memorial Day through Columbus Day after the freeze-thaw cycle settles.
