About this area
The Winds hold 40 named peaks above 13,000 ft and Gannett Peak (13,809 ft) as Wyoming's true high point — and the rig-grade access is concentrated on the western (Pinedale) side. Half Moon and Trails End developed loops at Half Moon Lake serve the Pole Creek trailhead complex; both cap at 30 ft, dry-camp, with the on-site dump at Half Moon. New Fork Lakes Campground further north handles similar specs. The Big Sandy access (FSR 740) into the southern Winds requires 14 miles of improved gravel that punishes long rigs at the washboard sections — most parties drop trailers at the Boulder turnoff. Dispersed camping is broadly allowed under the BTNF MVUM. Grizzly bear protocol is enforced across all loops north of US 26; the southern Winds carry black bear only.
