About this area
Cloud Peak Wilderness covers 189,000 acres of granite high country topping out at Cloud Peak (13,167 ft) — and the rig basecamp question reduces to which side of the range you're hitting. The east side (Buffalo) accesses through Tie Hack and Lost Cabin developed loops along US 16, both 30-ft dry-camp with the on-site dump at Tie Hack. The west side (Tensleep/Worland) accesses through Boulder Park, with similar limits and a longer climb. Dispersed camping is allowed broadly under the Bighorn MVUM — the high-country pull-offs along FSR 26 toward West Tensleep Lake are the most-cited dispersed spots in Wyoming travel forums. US 14 and US 16 are both National Scenic Byways and both cross the range above 9,000 ft; cooling-system load matters. Snow closes the high passes mid-October through early June without exception.
