Spruce Knob–Seneca Rocks NRA

West Virginia's high point — Spruce Knob at 4,863 feet — caps the Monongahela's signature recreation area, jointly managed with the Seneca Rocks crags 12 miles east. Spruce Knob Lake Campground sits at 3,840 ft and runs 42 dry-camp sites at a 30-ft cap; the access road (FSR 112) climbs the last 7 miles on improved gravel that punishes long overhangs at the switchbacks. Seneca Shadows Campground on the lower elevation side handles 35-ft rigs at the Seneca Rocks base — climbers fill it on summer weekends. Both loops have on-site dumps. Dispersed camping is allowed along most Forest Service roads under the Monongahela MVUM with the standard 200-ft stream setback. Spruce Knob's elevation produces a microclimate where the campground often runs 15°F cooler than valley readings — bring layers in August.
