Pisgah Ranger District — Mt. Mitchell Access

Davidson River Campground sits at the gateway to the Pisgah Ranger District and runs 160 sites year-round on a dry-camp basis — the longest operating season of any USFS loop in the Carolinas. Length caps top out at 30 feet because the loops weave between mature white pines that have stood since the forest was federalized in 1916. Lake Powhatan and North Mills River add seasonal capacity April through October with the same rig limits. The dump station at Davidson River is the only USFS-operated one between Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway gates. Mt. Mitchell — the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 ft — is reached via NC 128 off the parkway; the spur road is too tight for trailers over 20 ft, so the practical pattern is basecamp at Davidson River and toad up to the summit.
