About this area
The Kancamagus is a 34-mile federally-designated scenic byway, not a wilderness — and dispersed camping along its right-of-way is prohibited the entire length, a rule rangers cite at the Lincoln and Conway gateways. Six developed campgrounds line the corridor: Hancock, Big Rock, Passaconaway, Jigger Johnson, Blackberry Crossing, and Covered Bridge, each with a different rig cap (Big Rock holds 32 ft, Jigger Johnson tolerates 35) and all dry-camp only. Reservations route through recreation.gov for the four reservable loops; Blackberry Crossing and Hancock keep first-come-first-served slots. The byway tops out at 2,855 ft at Kancamagus Pass — leaf-peeping shoulder weeks in late September pack the pullouts faster than the campgrounds. Dump station is at the Saco Ranger District in Conway. The corridor's hardwood canopy means satellite reception is patchy enough that Starlink users park at the pass.
