Mid-May – mid-October (Lafayette Place)
Eight miles of granite-walled mountain pass between the Franconia Range and the Kinsman Range — a glacial U-valley narrow enough that Interstate 93 was downgraded to a 2-lane parkway through the park (the only stretch in the federal interstate system reduced to 2 lanes by design). Lafayette Place Campground holds 97 sites at a 35-ft cap, mid-May through mid-October, dry-camp only with the dump station at the entrance. Reservations open 11 months ahead via the New Hampshire State Parks portal. The Flume Gorge, the Basin, Profile Lake (former site of the Old Man of the Mountain rock formation that collapsed in 2003), and Cannon Mountain's aerial tramway are the headline day-use stops along the 2-lane parkway corridor — all reachable on foot from the campground via the recreation path that parallels the highway through the notch.
