About this area
More than 100 natural sandstone arches inside 29,000 acres — Red River Gorge is the densest concentration of arches east of Utah and the rock-climbing capital of the eastern US. Koomer Ridge is the USFS-operated developed loop with the on-site dump station (30-ft cap, dry-camp); the smaller Indian Creek loop is first-come walk-up with similar limits. Dispersed camping inside the geological area proper requires a free Red River Gorge permit and bans campfires due to the sandstone overhang fire risk that closed entire ranger districts in 2010 and 2020. Outside the geological area but inside the broader Daniel Boone NF, standard MVUM dispersed rules apply. The Nada Tunnel (12'9" clearance, 13' width) on KY 77 is the western approach's hard rig-size gate — measure before you commit.
