About this area
The Boise NF holds 2.6 million acres of ponderosa pine country between Boise and the Salmon-Challis boundary, and Lowman + Garden Valley is the dispersed-camping mecca for rigs that don't want the developed-loop reservation grind. Kirkham Hot Springs, Pine Flats, and Bonneville Hot Springs are the named dispersed clusters along ID 21 where the South Fork Payette River runs hot springs that vent at the granite contact. Developed loops include Helende, Kirkham, and Mountain View at 30-ft caps, dry-camp; on-site dump at Helende. Dispersed camping is broadly allowed under the Boise MVUM along Forest Service roads — the busiest spots fill on summer Fridays by 4pm. The fire history is recent and consequential: the 2016 Pioneer Fire scarred 188,000 acres adjacent to the byway, and post-fire road washouts continue to close sections of FSR 555 unpredictably.
