Class A — the big coach
Class A motorhomes are built on a heavy purpose-built chassis and look like a bus, with a flat front and large windshield. They're the largest motorized class, commonly 26–45 feet, and offer the most living space, storage, and amenities. Gas Class A coaches sit on a lighter chassis; diesel pushers (engine in the rear) are heavier, quieter on the highway, and tow better.
Driving feel: commanding view, wide turning radius, and real sensitivity to crosswind and passing trucks. They reward a calm, deliberate driving style and good mirror habits. First-timers can absolutely drive one, but it pays to start slow and practice in an empty lot before highway miles.
Class B — the camper van
Class B is the smallest motorized RV: a van (often a Mercedes Sprinter, Ram ProMaster, or Ford Transit) converted with a bed, galley, and sometimes a wet bath. They're easy to park, fit in a standard space, and get the best fuel economy of the motorized classes — at the cost of interior room.
Driving feel: closest to a normal vehicle. If you can drive a tall work van, you can drive a Class B. This is the most beginner-friendly motorized class for nervous first-time drivers who still want to camp self-contained.
Class C — the middle ground
Class C motorhomes are built on a van or truck cutaway chassis and are recognizable by the over-cab bunk or storage pod above the windshield. They're typically 20–33 feet and strike a balance: more space than a Class B, easier to handle than a Class A. This is the most popular first-time rental class.
Driving feel: like an oversized van or box truck. Higher and longer than what you drive daily, but predictable. Mind the height (low clearances, drive-throughs, tree branches) and the rear overhang on tight turns.
Quick chooser
If you want maximum space and don't mind a bigger vehicle, look at Class A. If you want the easiest drive and best maneuverability, look at Class B. If you want the practical middle — room for a family, manageable to drive — look at Class C.
- Easiest to drive: Class B → Class C → Class A.
- Most living space: Class A → Class C → Class B.
- Best fuel economy: Class B → Class C → Class A.
- Best first-timer balance for a family: Class C.
