Moraine Park Campground is the largest campground in Rocky Mountain National Park, located in a stunning mountain meadow at 8,160 feet elevation. The open meadow setting provides unobstructed views of the Continental Divide and is one of the best places in the park to spot elk.
What to Expect: Set against a backdrop of towering peaks, the campground sits in a broad glacial valley. Sites range from exposed meadow locations to sheltered spots among the ponderosa pines on the campground's edges.
Wildlife: Elk herds graze in the meadow daily, especially at dawn and dusk. During the fall rut (September-October), bull elk bugling echoes through the valley. Mule deer, coyotes, and occasionally moose are also spotted.
Hiking: Trail Ridge Road — the highest continuous paved road in North America — is easily accessible. Popular trails include Cub Lake, Fern Lake, and the Moraine Park Discovery Trail.
Winter Camping: A limited number of sites remain open year-round for winter camping. Expect temperatures well below freezing with snow on the ground.

Planning notes
The elk rut in September is unforgettable. Book early for late September dates.
At 8,000+ feet, nights are cold even in July. Bring warm layers and a good sleeping bag.
