San Juan Islands, Washington whale watching
The Salish Sea around the San Juans is one of the few places you can sometimes spot orcas from a clifftop bench. Lime Kiln Point — locals call it Whale Watch Park — looks straight onto a whale highway, and gray whales and porpoises pass through as well. It's a ferry-and-island kind of trip, slow and weather-led, which is exactly the point.
Typical season
Spring through fall
Whales to look for
Orca (killer whale), Gray whale, Harbor porpoise
Where
Lime Kiln Point State Park (“Whale Watch Park”), San Juan Island
Nearest RV base
Moran State Park, Orcas Island (ferry required)
Watch it honestly
Sightings are never guaranteed — the endangered Southern Resident orcas are often absent in summer. Lime Kiln Point is day-use only, and the Moran State Park RV base is on a different island, so build the ferry into your plan.
