Kittatinny Ridge Hawk Watches (incl. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary)
Pennsylvania's Kittatinny Ridge is one of eastern North America's classic raptor highways, channeling hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures southwest along the mountain on autumn winds. The Pennsylvania Game Commission recognizes it as Pennsylvania's largest Important Bird Area, used by at least 16 raptor species, with famous lookouts including Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Waggoner's Gap and Bake Oven Knob. For RVers it is a fall ridge-country trip: base in the valley, then hike up to a lookout on a brisk north-wind day to watch kettles of broad-winged hawks and, later, golden eagles. The lookouts are day-use, so plan to camp nearby.
Migration window
Fall raptor migration roughly mid-August through November; broad-winged hawks peak in early autumn, with eagles and greatest diversity later in fall
Flagship species

Plan it honestly
Raptor flights are entirely weather-dependent and vary year to year; big days and totals are never guaranteed — cold fronts with northwest winds drive the best flights. Broad-winged hawks peak in early autumn, with golden eagles and greatest diversity later in fall. Lookouts are day-use, hike-in overlooks with no camping; dress for exposed, windy ridgetops.
