Channel Islands National Park Tide Pools
Because they sit offshore from Ventura, the Channel Islands shelter some of the most pristine tide pools in Southern California. There are no roads or RVs out here — you park on the mainland and take a concessionaire boat — but the payoff is uncrowded rock teeming with sea stars, anemones, urchins and chitons at sites like Frenchy's Cove on Anacapa and Smuggler's Cove on Santa Cruz. Treat it as a boat day trip, or backpack into Scorpion Campground to catch the morning low.
Best low-tide window
Visit on a low (minus) tide during daylight; plan around the tide chart for your landing day — pools are exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide
What you'll see
Sea stars · Sea anemones · Sea urchins · Limpets, chitons, periwinkles, barnacles and mussels
Where
Channel Islands National Park, off Ventura, CA — accessible tidepool sites include Frenchy's Cove (Anacapa), Smuggler's Cove (Santa Cruz), Becher's Bay & East Point (Santa Rosa) and Cuyler Harbor (San Miguel)
Nearest RV base
Boat-access islands only — no cars or RVs land here. Park your RV on the mainland near Ventura Harbor and take a park concessionaire boat (Island Packers); on Santa Cruz Island, primitive Scorpion (Ranch) Campground (31 sites, reservations required, pit toilets, no fires, ~0.5 mile walk-in from the landing) is a backpack-in option
Explore it safely
You MUST check the tide chart and aim for a daytime low (minus) tide on your landing day — the pools are only exposed at low tide and times change daily, so coordinate with your boat schedule. Watch your step: the rocks can be very slippery and the surge can sneak up on you, so keep an eye on the waves. Do not collect anything — it's unlawful — and if you pick an animal up to look, place it back exactly where you found it.
