Watoga State Park
Watoga State Park, West Virginia's largest at about 10,100 acres, is one of the newer synchronous-firefly destinations and an official Dark Sky Park certified by the International Dark-Sky Association. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources runs ranger-led synchronized-firefly programs, typically around mid-June to the end of the month, later than the Smokies. For RVers it is a standout because the park has its own campgrounds with electric sites, so you can camp on the mountain and walk out into genuinely dark skies. Combine it with the surrounding Monongahela National Forest for a multi-night loop.

Watch it honestly
The firefly programs are ranger-led and can fill up, so check the park calendar and plan ahead rather than relying on a casual drop-in. Timing is weather-driven and sightings are never guaranteed - aim for the start of the show before about 10 p.m. on a calm, clear night. Follow Dark Sky etiquette: no artificial lighting or flash photography, stay on trails, do not capture fireflies, and cover up for insects rather than spraying repellent.
