Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park · fireflies
Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park
Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park in northeast Tennessee runs one of the region's more intimate firefly lotteries, covering both synchronous fireflies (Photinus carolinus) and the steady-glowing blue ghost. Because the park admits only about 10 vehicles per night, it feels far quieter than Elkmont. In 2025 blue ghost nights ran May 21-24 and synchronous nights June 2-3 and June 5-6, a useful guide to the typical window. The free lottery makes this a budget-friendly target for an RV trip through the Cherokee National Forest country.

Watch it honestly
Entry is by free lottery only, with a $50 vehicle pass if you're selected (one vehicle, up to six people) and very limited nightly slots, so plan a backup. Programs run 8-11 p.m. 'rain or shine,' but that refers to the program, not the fireflies - actual visibility depends on weather and timing and is never guaranteed. Arrive before 8 p.m. for the roughly half-mile paved walk to the viewing site, keep light to a minimum, and stay on designated paths.
