DuPont State Recreational Forest
DuPont State Recreational Forest near Brevard is one of the best-known homes of the blue ghost firefly (Phausis reticulata), a southern Appalachian specialty. Honest note for trip planning: the blue ghost is not a synchronous flasher - it emits a steady, floating blue glow low to the forest floor, which is a different spectacle from the unison flashing at Elkmont. Per the N.C. Forest Service, the forest is a day-use area open only 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with no camping, so it is not a place to settle in for late-night viewing. We include it for completeness because RVers researching synchronous fireflies in western NC consistently land here.

Watch it honestly
Manage expectations on two fronts: blue ghosts glow steadily rather than flashing in sync, and DuPont is day-use only, open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. with no camping, so peak after-dark activity falls largely outside official hours. Always check the forest's official trail-advisories and closures page before you go, stay on open trails, never use white light, and do not collect the insects. Sightings are weather-dependent and never guaranteed.
