Cook Forest State Park
Cook Forest State Park, with its old-growth Forest Cathedral of towering white pines and hemlocks, is one of the few places in the country where Pennsylvania's rare synchronous firefly appears among the state's 20-plus firefly species. The synchronous show here tends to run later than the southern Appalachian sites, typically in late June into early July, though timing varies year to year. The big advantage for RVers: this is one of the rare synchronous-firefly destinations with a real full-hookup campground on site, which makes Cook Forest a comfortable, lottery-free base in northwestern PA.

Watch it honestly
Unlike Elkmont and Congaree there is no in-park lottery, but the synchronous firefly is genuinely rare here and sightings are never guaranteed - go on a warm, calm, rain-free night and look for ranger-led firefly walks. Bring a red-filtered light, keep white light off, and stay on trails; the females rest on the forest floor. Reserve a Ridge Campground site early, as the June season fills fast.
