Mojave National Preserve, California super-bloom
Between the dunes and the Joshua tree forests, the Mojave Preserve greens up in spring and — in a wet year — runs to desert mariposa, aster and verbena along the paved roads. The bloom climbs about a thousand feet every couple of weeks, so April and May reward a patient driver. Hole-in-the-Wall makes a paved, any-size-rig base.

Roughly mid-March through early May; peak advances upslope through spring

Time it honestly
The NPS calls the bloom 'by no means an annual event' — in dry years there are few flowers. Check the preserve's wildflower page, and note the easiest viewing is along the paved roads.
