Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, along the Snake River in south-central Idaho, preserves one of North America's richest Pliocene fossil records — a snapshot of life roughly three to four million years ago. It's best known for the Hagerman Horse, Equus simplicidens, an early relative of modern horses found here in abundance. Hagerman captures a world on the cusp of the Ice Ages. The Park Service describes Pliocene fossils — roughly three to four million years old — as the key to the site, including the Hagerman Horse, saber-toothed cats, mastodons, ground sloths, beavers, and birds. Together they paint a picture of the animals and habitats of the late Pliocene Snake River Plain.
The Hagerman Horse, Equus simplicidens, is the monument's signature find and an early member of the horse family. The abundance of specimens recovered here has made the site important to scientists studying how horses evolved.
The National Park Service interprets the fossils at the Thousand Springs Visitor Center, about a mile north of downtown Hagerman on US Highway 30, with fossil exhibits and scenic overlooks of the fossil-bearing bluffs. The fossils themselves stay protected in the ground and in the collection — visitors come to learn and to look. Check the NPS site for current hours and nearby RV camping before you visit.
