Cataloochee Valley, Great Smoky Mountains elk rut
Elk vanished from the Smokies for over a century until they were reintroduced to remote Cataloochee Valley in 2001 — and now their fall bugling echoes off the ridges again. The valley is a quiet, winding drive into Appalachian history, best at first and last light when the bulls are most active.

Great Smoky Mountains law bans approaching elk within 50 yards (150 ft) — it's illegal in the park, and fields may be closed during the rut. The Cataloochee access road suits small rigs only (about 31 ft); leave big RVs at a base outside the valley.
