Summer unlocks the high country. Tioga Road opens (typically June), giving access to Tuolumne Meadows, Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake, and the eastern Sierra at Lee Vining. This is the only window to do a true Yosemite cross-park RV traverse. Valley campgrounds book out months ahead. The valley floor sees 80°F+ heat by July; the high country (8,000-10,000 ft) stays in the 60s-70s. Many RVers split a summer trip: 3 days in the valley, 3 days in Tuolumne Meadows. Afternoon thunderstorms above tree-line are routine. Plan strenuous hikes for morning. Lightning above the granite domes is a real risk — descend before noon.

What's special now
Highlights this season
Tuolumne Meadows + Tenaya Lake
The high country is a different park. Tuolumne Meadows Campground (RV sites to 35 ft) is the basecamp. Tenaya Lake swimming is the antidote to valley heat.
Glacier Point sunset
Drive Glacier Point Road (open summer-only) for the iconic Half Dome backdrop at sunset. Park in the upper lot — RVs over 30 ft restricted to lower turnaround.
Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
500+ mature sequoias including the 1,800-year-old Grizzly Giant. Shuttle only — park your RV at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza.
Half Dome day-hike
16-mile round-trip, 4,800 ft elevation gain, cables for the final 400 ft. Permit required via Recreation.gov lottery (apply March). Start at 4am to summit before thunderstorms.
Olmsted Point
The classic Tioga Road overlook — Half Dome from the backside, Tenaya Canyon below. Sunset photographers gather here.
Time it right
When to go
Best window to plan
Mid-June through early August is the standard window. Late August has thinner waterfalls and fire-smoke risk, but smaller crowds. Avoid July 4 weekend — valley becomes gridlock.

RV-specific considerations
Reservation lead time
Valley campgrounds (Upper, Lower, North Pines, Wawona) book 5 months out — sell out within minutes of opening on Recreation.gov. Tuolumne Meadows opens later (typically June) and books 1-2 months out.
Day-use reservations
Yosemite often requires day-use reservations during peak windows. Check current policy before your trip.
NPS sourceLength + height limits

Safety considerations
- Granite domes get blistering — 130°F surface temperatures in afternoon. Hike early, drink constantly.
- Black bears are aggressive about food in Yosemite. Use bear lockers, never leave food in vehicles, lock all coolers in the locker.
- Lightning kills above tree-line. Watch the western sky; if cumulus build, descend immediately.
- Half Dome cables are dangerous when wet. Don't attempt during rain or threatening weather.
- Wildfire smoke can shut down hiking activities for days. Check airnow.gov daily.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs
Valley campground rates: $36/night, no hookups. Tuolumne Meadows: $36/night. Outside the park, private RV parks in El Portal, Mariposa, and Groveland run $60-130/night summer rates. Lee Vining (Tioga east side) has limited options — book ahead. Fuel: $0.30-0.60/gal premium in Mariposa, much more in Lee Vining.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
When does Tioga Road open in Yosemite?
Typically late May to late June, depending on snowpack. Check the NPS site for current status. In a heavy snow year, the road may not open until July.
Can I drive my RV across Tioga Pass?
Yes, up to 35 ft. The road climbs to 9,945 ft — diesel rigs handle it better than gas. Watch coolant temperatures on the climb.
Where do I camp in Yosemite high country?
Tuolumne Meadows Campground takes RVs to 35 ft (no hookups, $36/night). Tamarack Flat and White Wolf are smaller and tent-friendlier.
Do I need a day-use reservation for Yosemite in summer?
Yosemite has implemented day-use reservations during peak windows in recent years. Check the current year's policy on the NPS website before traveling.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS site rarely promotes this: the Hetch Hetchy area (northwest corner, 1.5-hr drive from the valley) sees less than 1% of park visitors. There's no campground inside the area, but the day-use is spectacular — Wapama Falls hike (5 mi) gives you a Yosemite Valley experience without the crowds. Park your RV in the lot, day-hike, return to your valley basecamp by evening.
