Fall is the connoisseur's Yosemite. By mid-September, crowds drop sharply. Aspens turn gold along the Tioga Road. Valley waterfalls are usually dry, but the granite glows in golden afternoon light. The high country closes progressively from October. Tioga Road usually shuts late October to mid-November — the exact date depends on the first major snowstorm. If you're towing, watch the forecast and have an exit plan. Valley campgrounds remain easier to book through fall. Wawona stays open year-round and makes an excellent late-season base.

Highlights this season
Aspen color along Tioga Road
Late September through early October. Drive from Lee Vining over Tioga Pass for an East-Sierra fall color show — Conway Summit and Lundy Canyon are color-saturated stops.
Empty valley shuttles
By late October, you can find parking at iconic viewpoints without queueing. The free valley shuttle still runs but with breathing room.
Wawona + Mariposa Grove in cool weather
The giant sequoias against fall light. Cooler temps make the hike comfortable.
Glacier Point before closure
Glacier Point Road typically closes in November for winter. Late October sunset is the year's last chance.
Bear hyperphagia viewing
Black bears feed up to 20 hours a day in fall, building fat for winter. They're focused on calories — give them wide berth.

When to go
Best window to plan
Late September is the sweet spot — high country still open, crowds thinned, aspens turning. October is a coin flip between gorgeous fall color and Tioga closure. November is for valley-only trips at Wawona or the Pines.

Safety considerations
- First snowstorms can arrive without much warning. Carry chains, watch forecasts.
- Black bears are aggressive about food in fall. Strict bear-locker protocol at all campsites.
- Hypothermia risk increases. Dress in layers; carry warm clothes even on sunny mornings.
- Cell service remains poor. Have backup communication for emergencies.
- Dawn ice on roads is the leading cause of fall accidents — drive slowly at sunrise.

What it actually costs
Valley + Wawona rates: $36/night. Gateway-town private RV parks drop 20-40% after Labor Day. Mariposa, El Portal, and Groveland all have shoulder-season deals.
Quick answers
Frequently asked
When does Yosemite Tioga Road close in fall?
Typically late October to mid-November, depending on the first major snowstorm. Some years it stays open into December; others close in early October. Check current status before planning a through-route.
Is Wawona Campground open year-round?
Yes — Wawona is open all year. RVs to 35 ft. Reservations through Recreation.gov.
What's the best fall color in Yosemite?
Aspens along Tioga Road (especially the Eastside descent toward Lee Vining) peak late September to early October. Valley dogwoods turn red in late October.
Can I see Yosemite waterfalls in fall?
Many seasonal falls (Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil) are dry or trickling by October in normal years. Only Vernal and Nevada Falls have year-round flow.
What the NPS site won't tell you
Locals know: the road from Lee Vining (US-395) over Tioga Pass and down to the valley is one of the most spectacular fall-color drives in California — but it's a one-way commitment. If Tioga closes mid-trip, you face a 5-hour detour around the south end of the Sierra. Don't park your RV in Tuolumne Meadows if there's a major storm in the 48-hour forecast.
