Summer is Olympic at full breadth. Hurricane Ridge opens (June), unlocking alpine meadows and mountain views. Rainforests are still lush. Coast is comfortably warm. The park's loop highway (101) around the Olympic Peninsula creates a natural week-long RV circuit. Reserve campgrounds 6 months ahead.

Safety considerations
- Coastal sneaker waves kill — never turn back to ocean.
- Hurricane Ridge weather changes fast — pack winter clothes even in July.
- Black bears active everywhere — strict food protocol.
- Cell service absent in most of park.
- Wildfire smoke can degrade hiking conditions.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality

Quick answers
Frequently asked
When does Hurricane Ridge open?
Typically June, depending on snowpack. Road can be open weekends-only at first; full daily access by July.
How long should I plan for Olympic in summer?
Minimum 5 days for the highway 101 loop. A week lets you do all 3 ecosystems (rainforest, coast, alpine) properly.
Can I see the Pacific Ocean at Olympic?
Yes — Olympic includes 73 miles of Pacific coastline (Ruby, Rialto, La Push, Kalaloch, others). Different from any other lower-48 NPS coastline.
Are Olympic campgrounds full in summer?
Yes — book 6+ months ahead. Kalaloch, Mora, Hoh, Sol Duc all reservation-required.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS rarely promotes this, but: the Obstruction Point Road (gravel, off Hurricane Ridge) takes you into truly remote alpine country with a fraction of Hurricane Ridge crowds. RVs and trailers not advised on the rough road — drive tow vehicle. Obstruction Point trailhead is the start of some of the great Olympic backcountry hikes.
