Summer is the Grand Canyon's busiest and hottest. South Rim is bearable (high 80s); inner canyon exceeds 110°F. North Rim (open May 15-Oct 15) sits at 8,000+ ft and stays comfortable (70s-80s). For RVers, the smart play is to base on the North Rim or split the trip between both rims (4-hour drive between them, only 10 miles as the crow flies). Inner canyon hiking should be sunrise-only. Daily monsoon thunderstorms build in July-August. Plan around them.

When to go
Best window to plan
Late June and early August offer slightly easier crowd levels than mid-July. North Rim is your salvation from heat.

Safety considerations
- Heat kills more visitors than anything else. Hike at dawn only.
- Lightning on rim is a real risk during monsoons.
- Elk and mule deer hit vehicles regularly — watch dusk/dawn.
- Cliff edges have no fencing in many areas — keep kids close.
- Cell service patchy.
No surprises
Honest pricing reality
What it actually costs

Quick answers
Frequently asked
Is the North Rim worth visiting with an RV?
Absolutely, but RVs are limited to 27 ft. The North Rim is 1,000 ft higher, less crowded, and 10°F cooler. Open mid-May through mid-October only.
How hot is the inner canyon in summer?
Routinely 100-115°F at the bottom. NPS strongly discourages day-hiking into the canyon between June and August. Start hikes at dawn.
Can I camp at the canyon floor?
Yes — Bright Angel Campground and Indian Garden Campground. Permit required, lottery system, books months ahead.
What's the best summer strategy for the Grand Canyon?
Split between North Rim (cool, less crowded) and South Rim (more services). 4-hour drive between them. Or base North Rim and day-trip to South Rim viewpoints.
What the NPS site won't tell you
The NPS doesn't market this, but: the North Rim's Cape Royal Road extension to Walhalla Overlook is one of the great underrated drives in the NPS. RV-accessible (under 30 ft). Sunset over Wotans Throne is one of the great canyon views, with maybe 20 other people there.
